The flash drive contained hundreds of files.
Celeste had created plans for a life she believed was already hers.
Photographs showed her standing inside Evelyn’s bedroom.
Trying on Evelyn’s jewelry.
Measuring the nursery.
Sitting in the rocking chair beside three empty cribs.
One folder contained mock family announcements.
ADRIAN AND CELESTE WELCOME THE MERCER TRIPLETS HOME.
Evelyn’s name appeared nowhere.
Another file listed hospital discharge arrangements.
Adrian planned to leave with the babies two days after the delivery.
A private nurse had been hired.
Celeste would travel with them to a rented estate outside the city.
Evelyn would remain in the hospital under the claim that she required psychiatric observation.
The custody agreement would be filed immediately.
Adrian expected a judge to preserve the babies’ “current placement” while the dispute continued.
Celeste had even drafted instructions for the household staff.
Remove Mrs. Mercer’s personal belongings before children arrive.
Replace bedroom linens.
Forward legal correspondence to counsel.
A photograph of the Beverly Hills house appeared beneath the heading CELESTE’S RESIDENCE.
Evelyn viewed the files from her hospital bed.
She felt as though she were looking at plans for her own erasure.
Robert shut the laptop.
“That’s enough.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “I need to understand.”
The final folder contained trust calculations.
Celeste estimated how much the triplets might receive annually.
The figures were wildly inaccurate.
She and Adrian had mistaken educational and medical distribution limits for personal spending allowances.
Their entire plan rested on greed and ignorance.
But the emotional cruelty was real.
Adrian had not thrown the custody papers in anger.
He had prepared a new family while Evelyn risked her life creating the one he already had.
Celeste requested immunity in exchange for testimony.
Prosecutors refused.
They offered only the possibility of reduced charges if she provided complete evidence.
She immediately blamed Adrian.
“He said Evelyn would agree.”
The recording contradicted her.
Celeste’s own planning documents contradicted her.
The nursery photographs showed that she had participated for months.
Investigators also discovered that the transfer deed naming Celeste had been created before the triplets were born.
Adrian had already promised her the house.
He had simply waited until Evelyn was physically weakest to demand the signature.
At the emergency custody hearing, Adrian’s attorney argued that financial crimes did not determine parenting ability.
Then the prosecutor displayed the discharge schedule.
Adrian had planned to remove premature infants from their recovering mother through deception.
