Chapter 2 - The Daughter Who Walked Away
Four years earlier, Evelyn Bennett walked out of her parents’ home carrying two suitcases.
She was twenty-seven and tired of having every decision examined by a family committee.
Robert Bennett had built Bennett Strategic Partners into one of the largest private investment groups in the country.
Helena had created the family’s charitable foundation and managed a multigenerational trust established by Evelyn’s grandfather.
Evelyn grew up surrounded by drivers, security and advisers.
She hated how easily money entered every relationship.
When she became engaged to Adrian, her parents objected.
Not because he lacked wealth.
Because Robert’s investigators found inconsistencies in the finances of Mercer Development Group, the luxury residential company Adrian had inherited.
Adrian called the investigation insulting.
Evelyn agreed.
“I love him,” she told her father.
Robert remained calm.
“Love does not make questions dangerous.”
“You investigated him without asking me.”
“I wanted to know whether he was honest.”
“You wanted to control my choice.”
The argument ended with Evelyn refusing access to the family trust.
She moved into a small apartment and supported herself through architectural consulting.
Adrian praised her independence.
“At least you’re not like your parents,” he said. “They think money gives them the right to own people.”
At first, he seemed to want nothing from the Bennetts.
He planned a simple wedding.
He encouraged Evelyn to keep working.
He promised he would never demand that she reconcile with her parents for financial reasons.
Robert and Helena attended the ceremony but remained in the back row.
Robert shook Adrian’s hand afterward.
“Protect her.”
Adrian smiled.
“She doesn’t need protection from me.”
Evelyn heard only confidence.
Robert heard a warning.
During their first year of marriage, Adrian was attentive and affectionate.
He cooked dinner when Evelyn worked late.
He celebrated her projects.
He told friends he admired that she had walked away from billions to build her own life.
But Mercer Development Group was losing money.
Several buildings were overleveraged.
Investors were preparing to withdraw.
Adrian hid the crisis from Evelyn.
Then one evening, he casually asked whether her parents had ever mentioned creating trusts for future grandchildren.
Evelyn laughed.
“We don’t even have children yet.”
Adrian smiled and changed the subject.
