Chapter 3 - The First Question About Children
Adrian’s interest in having children changed almost overnight.
For the first two years of marriage, he insisted they had time.
He wanted to travel.
Expand the company.
Enjoy their freedom.
Then the private investigator sent him a partial copy of the Bennett family trust.
The document was old and incomplete.
But one sentence captured Adrian’s attention.
Each biological grandchild born to the direct Bennett line shall receive a protected beneficial interest upon birth.
Adrian did not understand the protections.
He saw only the possibility of money.
That evening, he arrived home carrying flowers.
“Maybe we should start trying,” he said.
Evelyn looked surprised.
“You said the Singapore expansion needed another year.”
“I’ve been thinking about what matters.”
She believed him.
Pregnancy did not come easily.
After more than a year of trying, doctors recommended fertility treatment.
The process exhausted Evelyn physically and emotionally.
Adrian attended the first appointments.
Then work became more important.
Helena learned about the treatments through a family friend and sent Evelyn a short message.
I know we are not close right now. I am thinking of you. No reply required.
Evelyn read it many times.
She did not respond.
Adrian found the message.
“Your mother knows?”
“Apparently.”
“Did she mention the trust?”
Evelyn turned toward him.
“What trust?”
“The one for grandchildren.”
She frowned.
“I haven’t read it since college.”
“How much does each child receive?”
“I don’t know.”
“You never asked?”
“No.”
His frustration surprised her.
“I’m only trying to understand our future,” he said quickly.
Evelyn accepted the explanation.
Several months later, doctors confirmed that she was pregnant.
Then the ultrasound revealed three heartbeats.
Evelyn cried.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Three children.
Three trust interests.
Three potential sources of wealth.
He kissed Evelyn’s forehead and told the doctor he was overwhelmed with joy.
But that night, he contacted the investigator.
“Find out who controls the money after the children are born.”
The investigator warned him that protected trusts rarely gave parents direct access.
Adrian answered, “Custodial parents control decisions for minors.”
“That does not necessarily include the trust.”
“Find me a way.”
Weeks later, Celeste Monroe entered his office carrying a file on Bennett family structures.
