Evelyn attended the hearing through a secure hospital video connection.
The triplets remained in the neonatal unit.
Her doctor confirmed that she was recovering appropriately and showed no signs of psychiatric incapacity.
Adrian appeared in person.
He wore a gray suit and the expression of a concerned father.
His attorney began by emphasizing that he had attended prenatal appointments.
The records showed he had attended three out of twenty-one.
The attorney claimed Evelyn was estranged from her support system.
Helena and Robert sat beside Evelyn on the video screen.
The attorney claimed Adrian had prepared custody documents because he feared Evelyn’s physical recovery would be difficult.
The nurse’s note was read aloud.
She won’t have enough strength to fight.
The judge asked Adrian directly, “Did you say that?”

“I was concerned she would become overwhelmed.”
“That is not what the sentence means.”

Then the NEW FAMILY schedule appeared.
The judge issued temporary sole custody to Evelyn.
Adrian was prohibited from removing the triplets from the hospital or contacting Evelyn directly.
Any future visitation would require professional supervision and a complete psychological evaluation.
Adrian’s composure cracked.
“She has no income.”
Robert’s attorney answered.
“Evelyn’s independent consulting firm remains profitable.”
“She hasn’t worked during the pregnancy.”
“She is also the beneficiary of assets that are entirely separate from you.”
Adrian looked toward Evelyn on the screen.
There it was again.
Not concern for the babies.
Anger that she possessed something beyond his reach.
The judge noticed.
“Mr. Mercer, children are not financial instruments.”
Adrian became silent.
After the hearing, Evelyn returned to the neonatal unit.
She placed one hand inside each bassinet.
Noah curled his fingers around hers.
Lily opened her eyes.
Grace slept beneath a tiny pink blanket.
Evelyn whispered, “No one is taking you.”
But securing custody did not end the financial case.
