Chapter 17 - The Woman in the Hospital Gown
By the time the trial began, the triplets were seven months old.
Evelyn entered the courtroom wearing a navy dress.
Adrian watched her from the defense table.
For a moment, his expression softened.
Then his attorney stood.
The defense argued that Evelyn had deceived Adrian by hiding the scale of the Bennett family fortune.
They claimed her parents had secretly financed Mercer Development to gain control.
They described Adrian’s hospital visit as a poorly timed divorce conversation rather than coercion.
Evelyn testified for nearly four hours.
She described leaving her parents.
Building her consulting business.
Trusting Adrian because he appeared to value independence.
She described the pregnancy.
His growing interest in the grandchildren’s trust.
The affair.
The forged application.
Then the hospital.
“What did Mr. Mercer say when he handed you the custody agreement?” the prosecutor asked.
“He said no one would want me.”
“How did you interpret that?”
“He believed birth had made me weak, unattractive and dependent.”
“Why didn’t you sign?”
“I looked at my children and understood that if I surrendered while afraid, fear would become the first decision I made for them.”
During cross-examination, Adrian’s attorney asked why Evelyn had hidden her parents’ wealth.
“I did not want money choosing my marriage.”
“So you tested Mr. Mercer?”
“I lived without family money because I wanted independence.”
“You allowed him to believe your parents had little power.”
“I allowed him to believe they would respect my boundaries.”
“And when your marriage failed, you called a billionaire father to destroy him.”
“I called my father after Adrian threatened to take three newborns unless I signed fraudulent papers.”
The attorney displayed the recording.
“You said, ‘Dad, I chose wrong.’”
“Yes.”
“You wanted your father to fix your mistake?”
Evelyn remained calm.
“I wanted one safe person to know where I was.”
The prosecutor then played Adrian’s recording.
She’ll be alone, in pain and terrified of losing them.
The contrast ended the defense’s argument.
Celeste testified next.
She admitted standing beside the bassinets while Adrian threatened Evelyn.
She admitted planning to move into the house.
She admitted creating the NEW FAMILY folder.
“Why did you believe Evelyn would sign?” the prosecutor asked.
Celeste looked toward Adrian.
“Because he said she had no one.”
The courtroom became silent.
Adrian’s entire plan rested on that belief.
