Chapter 1 - Don’t Sign Anything

“No one would want you now.”

Adrian Mercer threw the papers onto Evelyn’s hospital bed.

The divorce petition struck her chest before sliding across the white blanket. A custody agreement, property waiver and transfer deed followed it.

Evelyn stared at them through exhausted eyes.

Only hours earlier, surgeons had delivered her triplets by emergency C-section. Every movement pulled at the fresh incision across her abdomen.

Three transparent bassinets stood beside the bed.

Noah.

Lily.

Grace.

All three babies slept beneath the warm yellow lights, unaware that their father had entered the recovery room carrying documents designed to separate them from their mother.

Celeste stood beside Adrian in a fitted black dress, holding a black Birkin bag.

She smiled at Evelyn.

Not with sympathy.

With victory.

Adrian pressed a pen into Evelyn’s trembling hand.

“You’re unemployed. You have no house in your name and no money your parents will give you. Sign, and I might let you see the children.”

Evelyn looked at the custody agreement.

It granted Adrian primary custody.

It limited her to supervised visits.

The property waiver surrendered the family home.

Beneath the papers was a deed transferring that home to Celeste.

“You did this here?” Evelyn whispered.

Adrian leaned closer.

“You’ll be medicated for hours. By tomorrow, everyone will believe you agreed.”

Celeste lifted her bag slightly.

“Don’t make this uglier than it needs to be.”

Evelyn turned toward the phone beside her pillow.

Adrian assumed she was calling a nurse.

Instead, she pressed RECORD.

Then she called the number she had avoided for almost four years.

Her father answered immediately.

“Evelyn?”

Tears ran down her cheeks.

“Dad… I chose wrong.”

Across the city, Robert Bennett rose from behind his desk. Evelyn’s mother, Helena, sat beside the family attorney, listening as Adrian ordered Evelyn to sign.

Robert’s voice remained calm.

“Don’t sign anything.”

Adrian’s phone began vibrating.

Then Celeste’s.

PROPERTY TRANSFER FROZEN.

BANKING AUTHORITY SUSPENDED.

EMERGENCY TRUST REVIEW INITIATED.

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

Adrian snatched the papers from the bed.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn pulled the blanket tightly around herself.

“My parents are coming.”

The recovery-room door opened.

A dark-suited attorney entered carrying a sealed file.

And the first document inside revealed that Adrian had never owned the house he had promised to Celeste.

👉 The house was only the beginning—the real reason Adrian wanted custody was hidden inside a trust that activated the moment the triplets were born.
