Chapter 7 - The Hospital Adrian Chose
Evelyn planned to deliver at the hospital connected to her obstetrician.
Adrian changed the plan without telling her.
He claimed the original hospital had scheduling problems.
He moved the delivery to a private medical center where Mercer Development Group had financed a new wing.
Several administrators knew him personally.
The change made Evelyn uneasy.
Her doctor explained that the new hospital was well equipped for high-risk triplets.
Medically, it was safe.
Legally, Adrian believed it would be easier to control.
Celeste arranged a private recovery suite with limited visitors.
Adrian instructed hospital registration to list Robert and Helena as restricted contacts.
He claimed Evelyn had become estranged from them because they were emotionally abusive.
The information was false.
But it meant staff would not notify them if complications occurred.
At thirty-four weeks, Evelyn developed severe abdominal pain.
Adrian was attending a charity gala with Celeste.
Evelyn called him five times.
He did not answer.
The housekeeper drove her to the hospital.
Doctors discovered that one baby’s heart rate was dropping.
An emergency C-section was required.
Evelyn begged a nurse to call Helena.
The nurse checked the registration notes.
“Your chart says your parents should not receive information.”
“I never authorized that.”
The nurse’s expression changed.
She requested a patient advocate.
Before the advocate arrived, Evelyn was taken into surgery.
Noah was delivered first.
Then Lily.
Grace came last and required breathing support for several minutes.
Evelyn heard only fragments.
Doctors speaking.
A baby crying.
Someone saying blood pressure was falling.
Then darkness.
Adrian arrived after the delivery.
Celeste was with him.
He told staff she was the family’s legal adviser.
He did not enter Evelyn’s room first.
He went to the business office.
There, he requested confirmation that the babies’ birth certificates had been initiated.
Their births meant the trust interests now existed.
Adrian called his attorney.
“Prepare everything.”
Celeste stood beside the nursery window.
“Will she sign tonight?”
“She’ll barely know what she’s reading.”
“And if she refuses?”
Adrian looked through the glass at the triplets.
“Then we remind her who controls access to them.”
A nurse overheard part of the conversation.
She documented it in the medical chart.
Adrian did not know.
Hours later, Evelyn woke to find her husband absent and her parents still unaware that she had nearly died.
