Chapter 8 - Three Hundred Witnesses

After Daniel struck her, no one moved.
Then phones began rising throughout the ballroom.
Claire’s cousin recorded from beside the dance floor.
A hotel employee recorded from the service entrance.
The official wedding videographer’s camera had never stopped.
Daniel looked around.
“What are you doing?” he shouted at the guests. “Put those down.”
No one listened.
Claire held her cheek.
Her veil had slipped over one shoulder.
She looked toward her mother, Eleanor, who was already moving through the crowd.
Daniel blocked her path.
“This is between my wife and me.”
Eleanor’s voice became cold.
“You just struck my daughter.”
Vivian moved toward the safe again.
“Enough theatrics. Open it.”
Claire placed her palm against the metal door.
“That money is not yours.”
Daniel leaned close, believing she was still trapped by the room, the dress, and the shame.
“You will regret this.”
Claire slowly removed her wedding ring.
The sight disturbed him more than the guests’ cameras.
“Put that back on.”
She held the ring between two fingers.
“No.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Naomi entered.
The general manager had called her the moment security saw Daniel grab Claire’s wrist.
She had been waiting in the hotel office because of the suspicious camera request.
Two security officers moved toward Daniel.
He stepped back.
“This is my wedding.”
Naomi approached Claire first.
“Do you need medical attention?”
Claire’s cheek burned, but she remained steady.
“Not yet.”
Naomi turned to Daniel.
“You are being removed from the ballroom.”
“You cannot remove me from my family’s hotel.”
The general manager answered.
“The Mercer family does not control hotel operations under the current lender agreement.”
Vivian’s face tightened.
Naomi placed the prenup beside the safe.
“Before anyone takes another dollar, everyone here needs to understand that an emergency asset-protection provision is now active.”
Daniel laughed nervously.
“You cannot activate a contract because of one argument.”
Naomi pointed toward the security camera.
“This was not an argument.”
The manager displayed the recorded image.
Daniel looked at himself on the screen.
His raised hand.
Claire’s face turning from the impact.
Vivian standing beside the safe.
Naomi continued.
“The Ellison Trust is freezing all accounts connected to the attempted transfer and accelerating the Mercer hotel loan pending investigation.”
Vivian stepped forward.
“You’ll destroy hundreds of jobs.”
“No,” Claire said quietly. “You used those jobs as cover for theft.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew?”
Claire did not answer.
May you like
Because she had only begun to understand how long the theft had been happening.
👉 While security escorted Daniel from his own reception, Naomi received evidence that Vivian had already opened accounts using Claire’s future married name.
