Chapter 7 - The Insult Beside the Cake

Claire pulled her wrist free.

A red mark remained beneath her bracelet.

“Let go of me again,” she whispered, “and this wedding ends now.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Not with remorse.

With disbelief.

He had expected tears.

Negotiation.

Fear of public embarrassment.

Instead, Claire walked toward the cake table.

Vivian intercepted her.

“Daniel says you’re refusing to follow family tradition.”

“There is no tradition.”

“Your father clearly failed to teach you what marriage means.”

Claire stopped.

“Do not mention my father.”

Vivian smiled.

“He would be ashamed to see you guarding money from your husband on your wedding night.”

Several nearby guests became quiet.

Claire’s aunt stepped forward.

“Vivian, this is neither the time nor the place.”

Vivian ignored her.

She pointed toward the safe.

“My family paid for this ballroom.”

Claire answered calmly.

“My company paid every wedding invoice in full.”

The statement drew more attention.

Vivian’s voice rose.

“Then perhaps it is time you contributed something to the family you just joined.”

“We loaned your hotel twelve million dollars.”

Guests began turning toward them.

Daniel arrived.

“Claire, apologize.”

“For what?”

“For humiliating my mother.”

“She is trying to take money belonging to guests, a charity, and both spouses before it is counted.”

Vivian placed one hand dramatically against her chest.

“You’re calling me a thief?”

“I’m telling you to step away from the safe.”

Vivian grabbed the handle.

Claire moved between her and the steel door.

The ballroom became almost silent.

Daniel stepped close enough that Claire could smell champagne on his breath.

“You are making a scene.”

“No. I am stopping one.”

“Move.”

“No.”

Vivian leaned toward her son.

“Your wife needs to learn that she does not control this family.”

Daniel looked at the hundreds of guests.

Claire saw the calculation in his face.

He believed she would surrender before allowing a public argument to destroy the wedding.

That was why he raised his voice.

“That money belongs to us now.”

Claire shook her head.

“No, Daniel.”

He ordered her to apologize.

She refused.

Vivian whispered one final sentence.

“Make her understand.”

Daniel’s hand lifted.

For half a second, Claire believed he would stop.

He did not.

👉 The slap shocked the ballroom—but Daniel’s greatest mistake was believing Claire’s silence afterward meant surrender.
