Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Last Honest Conversation
Daniel asked to speak with Claire before entering a plea.
The meeting took place through glass at the county detention center.
Naomi sat nearby.
Daniel looked exhausted.
For the first time since the wedding, he did not begin with anger.
“I did love you.”
Claire studied him.
“When?”
He looked down.
“At the beginning.”
“Before or after your mother placed you beside me?”
He did not answer immediately.
“I knew who you were.”
“So the meeting was planned.”
“Yes.”
“Was the proposal planned?”
“The timing was.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
He claimed he expected only to secure the hotel loan.
He believed the family could repay it.
Then the debts grew.
Vivian insisted marriage would give them breathing room.
Daniel began signing documents.
At first, he told himself the accounts would never be used.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because every time I looked at you, I knew you would leave.”
“So you chose to make leaving harder.”
He pressed his hand against the glass.
“I thought once the hotel recovered, I could fix everything before you knew.”
“And the guardianship plan?”
“My mother wrote most of it.”
“You edited it.”
Daniel began crying.
“I was afraid.”
Claire’s voice remained quiet.
“You were not afraid when you grabbed my wrist.”
He lowered his hand.
“You made me feel powerless in front of everyone.”
“I told you not to steal charity money.”
“You chose your company over me.”
“No, Daniel. You asked me to choose your lies over myself.”
He looked at her through the glass.
“The slap was a mistake.”
“The raised hand may have lasted one second. Everything before it was a decision.”
Daniel’s face collapsed.
Claire removed the wedding ring from her purse.
She had kept it only as evidence.
She placed it inside an envelope for Naomi.
Daniel watched.
“Did any part of our marriage mean something?”
Claire answered honestly.
“There was no marriage. There was a ceremony you used as a deadline.”
She stood to leave.
Daniel called her name.
“My mother said you would forgive me to avoid scandal.”
Claire turned back.
“That was the final thing she misunderstood.”
Daniel accepted a partial plea on the assault and identity-theft charges.
But he refused to admit the larger conspiracy.
Vivian refused every offer.
The criminal trial would proceed.
