Chapter 2 - Before the Wedding Became a Transaction
Two years earlier, Claire believed Daniel loved her independence.
They met at a charity dinner inside the Mercer Grand Hotel, the same ballroom where they would later marry.
Claire owned Ellison Event Group, a national company that managed luxury venues, corporate conferences, and large-scale charity events.
She had built it with her late father, Arthur Ellison.
Daniel’s family owned the hotel.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
Daniel was charming without appearing rehearsed.
He asked Claire about hospital fundraisers instead of her revenue.
He remembered that she preferred plain sparkling water.
He listened when she spoke about her father’s death and never interrupted with stories about himself.
Vivian welcomed Claire warmly.
“You’re exactly the woman Daniel needs,” she said.
Claire mistook that sentence for affection.
The Mercer Grand looked successful from the outside.
Crystal chandeliers.
Marble floors.
Sold-out weddings.
Behind the polished walls, the family business was collapsing.
Daniel’s late father had borrowed heavily to expand.
Vivian hid the debt from employees and investors.
The hotel owed banks, contractors, and tax authorities more than twelve million dollars.
Daniel knew.
Claire did not.
Six months into the relationship, a burst pipe flooded three hotel floors.
Insurance covered only part of the damage.
Daniel told Claire the hotel might close.
She offered business advice.
Vivian asked for something larger.
A bridge loan from the Ellison Family Trust.
Claire refused at first.
Mixing romance and business felt dangerous.
Daniel did not pressure her.

Two weeks later, the trust approved a secured loan under strict conditions.

Daniel promised complete transparency.

Vivian called the missing documents a bookkeeping delay.
