Chapter 4 - The Account Daniel Hid

Claire discovered the first irregularity during the rehearsal dinner.

Her company’s finance director called while guests were arriving.

A vendor payment had been requested from an Ellison Event Group account.

The amount was $680,000.

The recipient was Mercer Hospitality Recovery LLC.

Claire had never heard of it.

The approval carried Daniel’s electronic signature as “incoming executive partner.”

Daniel held no position in her company.

He had no authority to sign.

Claire stepped into a quiet corridor and called him.

Daniel appeared irritated rather than surprised.

“My mother asked your finance team about temporary event support.”

“She submitted a payment request.”

“It must be a misunderstanding.”

“It includes your signature.”

“I probably signed something connected to the wedding.”

“You cannot accidentally sign as an executive of my company.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Do we have to do this tonight?”

“Yes.”

Guests passed at the end of the hallway.

Daniel smiled at them before turning back to Claire.

“Cancel it if you’re uncomfortable.”

“I already did.”

His face hardened for one second.

Then the charm returned.

“Good. Problem solved.”

It was not solved.

Claire sent the document to Naomi.

Within an hour, Naomi found that Mercer Hospitality Recovery had been formed only twelve days earlier.

Its registered manager was Vivian.

The company had no employees.

Its mailing address matched a post-office box used by Daniel’s cousin.

Naomi advised Claire to postpone the wedding.

Claire stared through the ballroom doors at the rehearsal dinner.

Her mother was laughing with old friends.

Daniel’s younger sister was helping children practice carrying flower baskets.

Everything looked joyful.

“What if this is Vivian acting without Daniel’s knowledge?”

“Then Daniel should be eager to investigate.”

He was not.

That night, Claire asked him to remove his mother from all wedding finances.

Daniel became defensive.

“She is losing her hotel.”

“Then she needs an accountant, not access to my company.”

“You have more money than you could spend in three lifetimes.”

“That does not make theft acceptable.”

Daniel walked toward the window.

“My family is drowning while yours sits on millions.”

“Our trust already lent your family twelve million dollars.”

“And you still control everything.”

The words remained between them.

Not we.

Not us.

You.

Claire looked at the man she was supposed to marry in forty-eight hours.

“Do you resent me?”

Daniel turned around.

“I resent having to ask permission for every breath.”

Then he apologized.

He blamed stress.

He held Claire until her doubts softened.

But after she fell asleep, Daniel texted Vivian.
