Chapter 12 - The Hearing After the Honeymoon That Never Happened
The hearing took place four days after the wedding.
Claire wore a cream suit instead of a bridal gown.
The bruise on her cheek had faded to yellow beneath light makeup.
Daniel sat across the courtroom.
He did not look ashamed.
He looked angry that Claire had escaped the role he assigned her.
His attorney described the wedding as a calculated trap.
Claire knew the hotel was struggling, he argued.
She placed security cameras.
Brought Naomi to the property.
Added the misconduct clause.
Then she provoked Daniel to activate it.
Naomi stood.
“The Mercer Grand installed those security cameras years before the engagement.”
The hotel manager confirmed it.
Naomi produced Daniel’s signed acknowledgment from the wedding morning.
He had expressly agreed that the safe and charity funds were protected.
The attorney changed direction.
He claimed Claire’s trust withheld loan flexibility to force the hotel into default.
The bank records showed the opposite.
The Ellison Trust had granted three extensions.
It had waived two late fees.
It had funded emergency payroll during the flood repairs.
Then the forensic accountant presented the unauthorized accounts opened in Claire’s future married name.
Daniel denied knowing about them.
Vivian claimed a junior employee made mistakes.
The loan applications contained Daniel’s voice verification.
The courtroom listened.
“Yes, this is Daniel Mercer. Claire Ellison will become Claire Mercer after the wedding. I am authorized to proceed.”
Daniel stared at the table.
The judge asked why he guaranteed loans in the name of a woman who had not signed.
Daniel answered, “We were going to be married.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
“Marriage does not create retroactive consent.”
Rose’s recorded statement was played next.
Vivian began crying when her mother’s face appeared.
Claire could not tell whether the tears came from grief or fury.
The judge appointed a temporary receiver over the hotel.
Vivian and Daniel lost management access.
Claire declined the position personally.
Instead, she nominated an experienced hospitality executive with no family ties.
The employees would keep their jobs.
The hotel would remain open.
Outside the courthouse, Daniel approached Claire before security stopped him.
“You took my family’s name, hotel, and future.”
Claire looked at him.
“I took nothing. I stopped you from taking mine.”
That evening, investigators executed search warrants on Vivian’s home and Daniel’s office.
