Chapter 6 - The Wedding That Looked Perfect

The ceremony was beautiful.

Claire walked beneath an arch of white roses while a string quartet played her father’s favorite song.

Daniel cried when he saw her.

For one fragile hour, every doubt seemed unfair.

He held her hands during the vows.

He promised safety.

Respect.

Partnership.

Vivian sat in the front row wearing silver and diamonds.

She smiled through the ceremony.

Yet when Daniel said, “All that I am is yours,” Vivian’s expression carried private amusement.

The reception began at sunset.

Guests filled the ballroom.

The gift safe stood behind the cake table under direct security-camera coverage.

Two hotel guards remained nearby.

Claire’s accountant logged each envelope through a narrow deposit slot.

No one opened the safe.

By 9:00 p.m., Vivian had asked about the count six times.

The accountant gave her no number.

At 9:17, Daniel’s cousin attempted to move the safe into a private office.

Security stopped him.

He claimed Vivian had authorized it.

At 9:30, the hotel bank called Derek Mercer, Daniel’s uncle and acting finance manager.

A scheduled loan payment had failed.

If the account was not funded by midnight, the lender would issue a default notice.

Derek told Vivian.

She pulled Daniel away from the dance floor.

Claire watched them speaking near the bar.

Vivian’s face was tight with anger.

Daniel looked toward the safe.

Then toward Claire.

He returned to the dance floor and took her hand.

“My mother wants the gifts counted tonight.”

“No.”

“She’s worried about security.”

“The safe is secure.”

“She says family tradition requires the groom’s mother to hold the key.”

“There is no key. And that was never discussed.”

Daniel’s smile remained fixed for the guests.

“Give her the code.”

“I don’t have it.”

“Then tell your accountant to open it.”

Claire pulled her hand away.

“No.”

Several guests continued dancing around them.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Do not embarrass me.”

Claire stared at him.

“You’re asking for charity checks and wedding gifts because your hotel payment failed.”

His eyes widened.

“How do you know that?”

The answer told her everything.

He did know about the default.

He had hidden it.

Claire stepped backward.

“I need to speak with Naomi.”

Daniel caught her wrist beneath the tablecloth.

His fingers tightened.

“You are not leaving this ballroom until my mother gets access to that safe.”

👉 The groom who promised partnership at the altar had just revealed that the reception was never a celebration—it was a deadline.
