Chapter 10 - What Was Actually Inside the Safe
The safe remained sealed overnight.
The hotel placed it under independent security.
The following morning, Naomi, Claire’s accountant, the hotel manager, and a police representative attended the opening.
Daniel and Vivian were not permitted inside.
Every item was documented.
The total was far less than Vivian expected.
Cash gifts amounted to $118,000.
Checks payable jointly to Claire and Daniel totaled $204,000.
Charitable donations to the Ellison Children’s Medical Fund totaled $940,000.
There were jewelry boxes, handwritten letters, and several family heirlooms.
Nothing could have solved a twelve-million-dollar crisis.
Then the accountant found a large sealed envelope addressed to Claire.
It had been deposited by Arthur Ellison’s former business partner.
Inside was a handwritten note and a small data drive.
Arthur had prepared them before his death.
The note congratulated Claire if she had found a partner worthy of her trust.
It also warned her never to confuse marriage with surrender.
Claire’s hands shook as she connected the drive to Naomi’s secure laptop.
The files contained old correspondence between Arthur and Vivian.
Ten years earlier, Vivian had approached Arthur for an investment in the Mercer Grand.
Arthur declined after discovering inflated occupancy reports and hidden debt.
Vivian accused him of trying to ruin her family.
Arthur wrote back:
I am not refusing because I dislike you. I am refusing because your numbers are false.
The final email came from Vivian.
One day your daughter may need something from my son. We will see whose family holds the power then.
Claire read the sentence twice.
Daniel had claimed their meeting at the charity dinner was accidental.
It was not.
Hotel records showed Vivian personally changed the seating chart.
She placed Daniel beside Claire.
The engagement had not started as a rescue after they fell in love.
Vivian had identified Claire years earlier as the path to Arthur’s fortune.
Naomi cautioned Claire.
“That does not prove Daniel never loved you.”
“No,” Claire said. “The slap proved what he loved more.”
The safe also contained something unexpected.
A cashier’s check from Daniel’s grandmother for $500,000.
The note attached read:
For Claire alone. I hope she learns the truth before it costs her peace.
Daniel’s grandmother had known something.
