Chapter 5 - The Clause Daniel Never Understood
Naomi arrived at Claire’s bridal suite before noon.
She brought a revised emergency acknowledgment for Daniel to sign.
It stated that neither Daniel nor the Mercer family had authority over the wedding safe, Ellison accounts, charitable gifts, or trust assets.
Claire read it carefully.
“Is this necessary?”
“Yes.”
“Will it make him feel accused?”
“He submitted a false payment request.”
“Vivian may have used his signature.”
“Then he can sign without hesitation.”
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
He wore his tuxedo pants and an unbuttoned white shirt.
When he saw Naomi, his mood changed.
“What is this?”
“A clarification.”
He read the first page.
“You’re making me sign another prenup on our wedding day?”
“It does not change the agreement,” Naomi replied. “It confirms existing terms.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You approved this?”
“I need to know the safe and charity funds are protected.”
“From my family.”
“From anyone without authority.”
Daniel threw the pen onto the table.
“This is humiliating.”
Claire’s bridesmaids became silent.
Naomi closed the folder.
“Refusing is your choice.”
Daniel paced toward the mirror.
For several seconds, he looked like a man calculating consequences rather than a groom feeling wounded.
Then he picked up the pen.
He signed.
“You happy?”
Claire wanted to say no.
Instead, she stepped closer.
“I want to marry you. I don’t want to fight over money.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
“Then trust me tonight.”
Naomi waited until he left.
“He did not ask what the document meant.”
“You explained it.”
“He asked whether you approved it. That matters.”
Claire looked toward the closed door.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying he is more concerned with controlling your decision than understanding his own legal obligations.”
Naomi then explained the misconduct clause again.
The clause required no criminal conviction.
Verified intentional violence or coercion witnessed by independent parties could activate temporary protections immediately.
The trust could freeze connected accounts.
The hotel loan could become due.
Daniel’s future company benefits would disappear.
Claire tried to smile.
“None of that will happen at my wedding.”
Naomi placed the signed acknowledgment inside her folder.
“I hope you’re right.”
Before leaving, she gave the hotel manager a sealed copy and instructed him to preserve all security footage.
Claire did not know why.
Naomi had received a message from the finance director minutes earlier.
Someone had attempted to disable the ballroom cameras for the final hour of the reception.
