Chapter 11 - The Grandmother’s Confession
Daniel’s grandmother, Rose Mercer, had recorded a statement before her death.
Her attorney played it for Claire and Naomi.
Rose sat in a wheelchair beside a window.
Her voice was weak but clear.
“Vivian believes the hotel is her inheritance. It is not.”
The Mercer Grand had originally belonged to Rose and her husband.
After his death, Vivian managed operations.
She told Daniel and the rest of the family that ownership had transferred to her.
In reality, Rose still held controlling shares through a trust.
Vivian had borrowed against assets she did not fully own.
Rose discovered the hidden loans too late.
She confronted Daniel six months before the wedding.
He admitted the family needed Claire’s money to avoid bankruptcy.
Rose asked whether Claire knew.
Daniel said she would understand after they were married.
“I told him that a woman is not a financial plan,” Rose said in the recording.
Daniel stopped visiting her.
Vivian tried to have Rose declared mentally incompetent.
Rose contacted Naomi through her attorney but died before they could complete the investigation.
The $500,000 check was part of Rose’s personal account.
She wanted Claire to control it until the hotel employees could be protected.
Then came the largest revelation.
Rose had amended her trust.
If Vivian or Daniel committed fraud involving the hotel, their management rights would terminate.
Control would pass temporarily to an independent receiver.
The trust named Claire as an eligible receiver because her company had already loaned the hotel money and possessed the strongest operating experience.
Claire stared at Naomi.
“I don’t want their hotel.”
“This is not ownership,” Naomi explained. “It is temporary control to protect the property and staff.”
“Vivian will say I planned this.”
“She will say anything.”
The receiver clause required court approval.
Naomi filed that afternoon.
Daniel responded by accusing Claire of arranging the wedding confrontation to seize the Mercer Grand.
His attorney claimed the slap was staged after Claire provoked him.
Then another video appeared.
A guest had recorded Daniel and Vivian near the bar before the confrontation.
Vivian could be heard saying:
If she won’t open it, make her too embarrassed to refuse.
Daniel answered:
She won’t fight me in front of everyone.
The recording spread across the country.
Daniel’s claim of provocation collapsed within hours.
But his attorneys found another strategy.
They argued Claire had secretly controlled the hotel loan and deliberately pushed the Mercers into default.
