Chapter 9 - The Neighbor Who Heard the Cry

Jason and Claire lived in a gated neighborhood fifteen minutes from the hospital.
Their next-door neighbor, Linda Porter, had been awake caring for her sick dog.
At 11:46 p.m., she saw Jason’s car enter the driveway.
She assumed Claire and the baby had returned home.
Twenty minutes later, Linda heard a woman shouting.
Not Claire.
Another woman.
“You said she’d be asleep!”
Then she heard glass break.
Linda walked outside.
Through the Mason kitchen window, she saw Jason supporting Claire beneath the arms.
Claire’s feet dragged across the floor.
Monica stood near the counter.
A newborn carrier rested on the table.
Linda knocked on the door.
Jason opened it only a few inches.
He claimed Claire had fainted from exhaustion.
Linda offered to call an ambulance.
Jason refused.
Then Claire spoke from somewhere behind him.
“Please.”
One word.
Barely audible.
Linda called 911 from her own house.
The dispatch record showed the call at 12:24 a.m.
But emergency services were canceled four minutes later.
The cancellation came from Jason’s phone.
He told dispatch Claire was conscious and refusing transport.
Linda never knew the ambulance had been canceled.
At 12:41, she saw Jason carry Claire back to the car.
Monica followed with Rose.
But only Jason and Claire returned to the hospital.
Monica drove away in a second vehicle with the baby.
Linda had written down the license plate because the car was unfamiliar.
It belonged to Monica’s sister.
Police traced toll-camera images north toward Lake Erie.
Monica had taken Rose out of the county.
Officer Shaw issued a statewide child-recovery alert.
At the same time, investigators obtained the canceled 911 audio.
Jason’s voice was clear.
Claire’s voice could be heard in the background.
She was saying, “Don’t take my baby.”

Jason told the dispatcher it was television noise.
👉 Claire fought to protect Rose until her final conscious moments—and Jason used her weakness to make her sound delusional.
