Chapter 17 - Rose Comes Home
Rose remained at the hospital for two days.
Doctors found no sign that Monica had physically harmed her.
She was healthy.
Hungry often.
Quick to settle when held against Helen’s chest.
A family court granted Helen and Tom temporary guardianship.
Jason’s attorney objected from jail.
He argued that arrest did not terminate parental rights.
The judge reviewed Claire’s letter, Jason’s forged custody papers, and the kidnapping evidence.
Jason was denied contact.
Rose went home with her grandparents.
Helen placed the bassinet beside her bed.
The first night, she did not sleep.
Each small sound made her sit up.
Tom found her watching Rose breathe at three in the morning.
“She’s safe,” he said.
Helen touched the baby’s tiny hand.
“Claire should be here.”
“I know.”
“I keep thinking I’ll call her and tell her what Rose did.”
Tom sat beside her.
“Then tell her.”
Helen looked at him.
He nodded toward the framed photograph on the dresser.
So Helen spoke.
She told Claire that Rose had smiled in her sleep.
That she hated cold bottles.
That she calmed when someone hummed the song Claire loved as a child.
Grief did not disappear.
But it moved.
It made room for responsibility.
Meanwhile, Jason’s company froze his accounts.
The trust court removed him as potential trustee.
Claire’s attorney, Rachel, produced a signed amendment naming Helen and Tom as Rose’s guardians if Claire died under suspicious circumstances.
Jason claimed the amendment was forged.
The signing had been recorded on video.
He lost that argument within minutes.
The judge made the guardianship permanent pending the criminal case.
Outside court, reporters asked Helen whether she hated Jason.
She looked into the cameras.
“Hate is not what Claire left us.”
“What did she leave?”
