Chapter 12 - Claire’s Safe-Deposit Key
Among Claire’s belongings at the medical examiner’s office was a small brass key sewn into the lining of her purse.
It belonged to a bank safe-deposit box.
Jason had searched the purse at home but missed it.
Helen and Tom obtained access through a court order.
Inside the box were copies of financial statements, medical records, and handwritten notes.
Claire had documented months of controlling behavior.
Jason monitored her phone.
Limited her access to money.
Pressured her to name him sole trustee of Rose’s inheritance.
He also forged her signature on several investment transfers.
The box contained a letter addressed to her parents.
Mom and Dad,
If you are reading this, something happened before I could leave.
Jason knows I plan to take Rose and stay with you.
He has become obsessed with the trust.
He says marriage means there should be no separate money.
I do not believe he will hurt the baby.
I am no longer certain what he might do to me.
Please believe me even if he says I was depressed after giving birth.
I am afraid he is preparing that story already.
Helen could not finish reading aloud.
Tom continued.
Claire had also written the name of a family-law attorney, Rachel Kim.
Officer Shaw contacted her.
Rachel confirmed Claire had scheduled an emergency meeting for the morning after Rose’s birth.
Claire planned to file for a protective order.
She had sent Rachel a secure digital package.
Inside were screenshots of Jason’s messages and one audio recording.
In it, Jason said:
“If you leave, I control what everyone believes happened.”
Claire answered, “Not anymore.”
Jason asked what she meant.
Claire said, “I made copies.”
That was the document Jason searched for while she bled.
Not one document.
An entire file.
Rachel had preserved it.
