Chapter 7 - The Coffin Is Opened
The county medical examiner arrived at the chapel after midnight.
Dr. Rebecca Sloan entered with two investigators and a court order.
Helen stood beside Tom as the floral arrangement was removed.
Jason had insisted no one open the coffin.
Now he was not there to stop them.
Walter released the first latch.
Then the second.
The lid rose slowly.
Helen gripped Tom’s hand.
The woman inside wore Claire’s black burial dress.
Her hair had been arranged like Claire’s.
A lace veil partially covered her face.
But she was not Claire.
Helen knew before anyone spoke.
The jawline was wrong.
The hands were older.
There was no small crescent-shaped scar near the left thumb from a childhood bicycle accident.
Tom stumbled backward.
“That isn’t our daughter.”
Dr. Sloan immediately closed the lid.
The remains were removed as evidence.
Fingerprints later identified the woman as Evelyn Price, a sixty-eight-year-old nursing-home resident whose body had been awaiting cremation at another funeral facility.
The facilities shared the same transportation contractor.
Someone had switched the identification tags.
Walter stared at the paperwork.
“Jason chose that contractor.”
Officer Shaw asked Dr. Sloan what had happened to Claire’s body.
The medical examiner’s face tightened.
“It never left our secured facility.”
Helen looked at her.
“What?”
Dr. Sloan explained that Claire’s body remained in county custody because toxicology results raised concerns.
The release paperwork delivered to Walter had been forged.
Jason had arranged a funeral with another woman’s remains while Claire was still at the medical examiner’s office.
“Why?” Tom asked.
Dr. Sloan answered carefully.
“Because once the official report was completed, he knew we would not authorize the cause of death he wanted.”
Helen’s voice shook.
“What did you find?”
“A level of anticoagulant medication far beyond any therapeutic range.”
The drug would make bleeding nearly impossible to control.
Claire had not simply suffered a postpartum complication.
