Chapter 21 - The Funeral Director Testifies
Walter Pierce entered court carrying the same thin folder he held in the chapel.
He described Jason’s behavior before the funeral.
Jason demanded a closed coffin.
He refused identification by Claire’s parents.
He selected an outside transportation contractor despite Walter’s objections.
He delivered forged medical-examiner paperwork.
And on the morning of the service, he deleted the legal-hold email.
The prosecutor asked about the confrontation near the coffin.
Walter repeated Helen’s demand.
“Open it.”
He described Jason blocking the latch.
Then Tom’s question.
“What are you hiding?”
Finally, Walter repeated his own words.
“Your daughter’s case involved the coroner.”
“What did Mr. Mason say?”
Walter looked toward Jason.
“He asked, ‘Who told you to mention the coroner?’”
“Why did that surprise you?”
“Because I had never told him I knew.”
The prosecutor let the silence remain.
Jason’s reaction demonstrated consciousness of hidden information.
Walter also testified that Jason offered him fifty thousand dollars to seal the coffin permanently.
Walter refused.
Jason threatened to destroy his business.
“Why did you still keep quiet initially?” the prosecutor asked.
Walter’s voice broke.
“I was afraid.”
Helen watched him carefully.
Walter had failed them.
But he had also spoken when Jason stood only feet away.
The prosecutor asked what changed his mind.
Walter looked at Claire’s memorial photograph displayed as evidence.
“Her mother reached for the latch.”
He swallowed.
“And I realized I was helping bury a lie.”
The defense attacked his courage.
“You waited until police arrived.”
“Yes.”
“You protected yourself.”
“Yes.”
Walter did not pretend otherwise.
“But I told the truth before the coffin left my building.”
His testimony connected Jason directly to the body substitution.
Dominic’s emails confirmed the payment offer.
The funeral contractor testified that Jason instructed him to switch identification labels.
The chain was complete.
Poisoning.
Delay.
Kidnapping.
False body.
