Chapter 15 - The Marina

Jason reached the marina before sunset.
A cold wind moved across the Detroit River.
Dominic had promised the boat would be fueled and waiting.
Instead, Officer Shaw watched from inside the cabin.
Jason approached carrying one suitcase and Claire’s missing phone.
He looked over his shoulder repeatedly.
When he stepped aboard, officers moved in.
“Jason Mason, show us your hands.”
He froze.
Then he threw Claire’s phone toward the water.
An officer caught his wrist before he released it.
Jason struggled.
Not violently.
Desperately.
“You don’t understand,” he said. “That phone belongs to me.”
Officer Shaw secured it inside an evidence bag.
“It belonged to Claire.”
“She was my wife.”
“That did not make her your property.”
Jason was arrested for murder, kidnapping conspiracy, evidence tampering, fraud, and obstruction.
Inside his suitcase, police found cash, forged identification, and Claire’s wedding ring.
He had removed it before creating the false funeral.
Why keep it?
Jason later claimed sentiment.
Officer Shaw believed it was control.
He kept the final object that identified Claire as his wife while replacing her body with someone else’s.
At the station, Jason requested an attorney.
He refused questions.
But when he saw Monica being escorted through the hallway, he spoke.
“She did it.”
Monica stopped.
“You crushed the pills.”
“You gave them to her.”
“You canceled the ambulance.”
Jason turned toward Officer Shaw.
“She kidnapped my daughter.”
Monica’s face changed.
“You told me Claire would survive.”
Jason answered, “You were the nurse.”
Their accusations were recorded.
Each confirmed pieces of the other’s involvement.
Claire’s phone remained locked.
Technicians could not immediately access it.
But Rachel Kim provided the passcode Claire had included in her secure file.
The device opened.
Inside was a final video recorded in Jason’s kitchen.
Claire was weak, frightened, and struggling to focus.

But she had aimed the camera at him.
