Chapter 19 - Monica Takes the Stand

Monica accepted a plea agreement.

She would receive a reduced sentence in exchange for complete testimony.

Helen did not forgive her.

Claire was dead because Monica chose money over a patient.

But the truth required every participant to speak.

Monica described meeting Jason through Dominic.

Jason offered her two hundred thousand dollars.

Her role was to ensure Claire left the hospital quickly and without a full medical review.

She altered chart entries.

Used Claire’s hand to complete the digital discharge.

Removed the newborn security tag under the pretense of a system error.

Then she followed Jason to the house.

The plan was to have Claire sign financial and custody documents while sedated.

“What did you understand the medication would do?” the prosecutor asked.

“Make her tired and confused.”

“Did you know it increased bleeding risk?”

Monica looked down.

“Yes.”

“Then why administer it after childbirth?”

“He said the dose was small.”

“Who crushed the tablets?”

“Jason.”

“Who mixed them into the drink?”

“I did.”

Helen closed her eyes.

Monica continued.

When Claire began bleeding, Monica wanted to return immediately.

Jason refused until he found the copied evidence.

“He kept saying she was pretending to be worse than she was.”

The same sentence he later used at the funeral.

The prosecutor asked why Monica took Rose.

“Jason said if Claire died, police would blame me. He told me to keep the baby until he fixed the records.”

“Did you believe Rose was safe with you?”

“I believed she was safer away from him.”

Jason’s attorney attacked Monica’s credibility.

“You are testifying to save yourself.”

“Yes,” Monica answered.

“But that does not make what I’m saying false.”

Then the prosecutor played Claire’s kitchen video.

Monica’s account matched every visible moment.

Jason watched without expression.

Only his right hand moved.

It repeatedly pressed the pocket where his phone used to be.

👉 Monica admitted her crime—but the jury still had to decide whether Jason intended Claire to die.
