Chapter 8 - The Medication Claire Never Received
Claire’s hospital chart showed no order for anticoagulant medication.
She had no condition requiring it.
The drug found in her blood was commonly used after certain surgeries and for high-risk clotting disorders.
Claire had neither.
Dr. Sloan believed the medication entered her system after delivery and before the emergency readmission.
Officer Shaw searched the Mason home.
In Jason’s locked desk, investigators found an empty prescription bottle.
The label had been removed.
Residue matched the drug in Claire’s toxicology screen.
They also found financial documents.
Claire owned a life insurance policy worth four million dollars.
Jason was the beneficiary.
More importantly, Claire’s grandmother had created a trust for Rose.
If Claire died, Jason would control the trust as the surviving parent.
Unless Claire’s parents could prove him unfit.
The trust held nearly twenty-two million dollars.
Tom stared at the documents.
“He killed her for money.”
Officer Shaw did not make the accusation yet.
“We still need to prove how the medication was administered and who participated.”
A search of the kitchen revealed a small mortar used to crush pills.
Claire had sent Helen a photograph that evening of a fruit smoothie beside her hospital bed.
Jason brought it from home.
The cup had been discarded at the hospital.
But a nurse remembered Claire complaining that it tasted bitter.
Monica Bell told her pregnancy could alter taste.
The same nurse then documented that Claire became unusually drowsy.
That entry had later been deleted from the electronic chart.
Hospital technicians recovered it.
Officer Shaw believed Monica helped Jason discharge Claire before the full effects became obvious to the medical team.
But one question remained.
Why take Claire away from the hospital rather than let her die there?
Dr. Sloan offered an answer.
“Because an unexpected death inside the maternity unit would trigger immediate review.”
At home, Jason could delay treatment and blame ordinary postpartum bleeding.
But something disrupted the plan.
