Chapter 16 - Claire’s Final Recording
The video began at 11:53 p.m.
Claire sat in a kitchen chair wrapped in a hospital blanket.
Her face was pale.
Rose cried inside the carrier on the table.
Monica paced beside the sink.
Jason searched Claire’s purse.
Claire whispered, “Call my mother.”
Jason ignored her.
She repeated herself.
“Call my mother.”
“You discharged yourself,” Jason said.
“I couldn’t hold the screen.”
“Your signature is there.”
Monica stepped closer.
“She needs a hospital.”
Jason turned on her.
“You said the dose was safe.”
“I said it would sedate her.”
Claire looked toward the phone she had secretly propped against a fruit bowl.
“You drugged me.”
Jason’s face appeared in frame.
“You were going to destroy this family.”
“I was leaving you.”
“With my daughter and my money.”
“It was never your money.”
He crouched beside her.
“Tell me where the copies are.”
Claire’s breathing became shallow.
“No.”
Jason gripped the arms of the chair.
“Where?”
“Somewhere you can’t bury.”
Rose began crying louder.
Claire tried to stand.
She collapsed back.
Monica reached for the phone on the counter, unaware another phone was recording.
Jason stopped her.
“First we fix the documents.”
Then Linda knocked.
The recording captured Jason refusing help.
It captured Claire pleading.
It captured the canceled ambulance call.
At 12:37, Monica shouted that Claire was losing consciousness.
Jason finally lifted her.
Before the video ended, Claire looked toward the hidden phone.
Her eyes seemed to focus for one brief second.
“Rose,” she whispered. “Take her to Mom.”
Helen watched the recording with both hands over her mouth.
Claire’s last clear request had been to protect her daughter.
Officer Shaw turned off the screen.
The case no longer depended on inference.
Jason’s own words established motive.
Control of Rose.
Control of the trust.
