Chapter 23 - Claire’s Letter to Rose
Rachel Kim read the letter.
It had been stored with Claire’s safe-deposit documents.
It was addressed to Rose.
My sweet girl,
You may never need this letter.
I hope I grow old enough to embarrass you, argue with you, and tell the same stories too many times.
But if something happens to me, I need you to know that you were loved before I ever saw your face.
Your father can be charming.
He can also make people doubt what they know.
For a long time, I thought love meant trying harder to make him feel secure.
Then I realized every concession became permission for the next demand.
I am leaving because I want you to grow up knowing that love does not monitor your phone, control your money, isolate your family, or punish you for saying no.
If I fail to leave safely, it is not because I did not try.
It is because someone decided my freedom was a threat.
Helen bowed her head.
Rachel continued.
Your grandparents will tell you about me.
Believe them when they say I fought.
Believe yourself when something feels wrong.
And never confuse someone’s need to control you with their fear of losing you.
You are not a possession.
You are a person.

The courtroom remained silent.
Jason stared at the table.
The prosecutor did not look at the jury immediately.
She allowed Claire’s final sentence to settle.
You are not a possession.
Then she asked Rachel when the letter had been written.
“Six days before Rose’s birth.”
“Did Claire appear detached from reality?”
“No.”
“Did she understand her finances, medical condition, and legal options?”
“Completely.”
“Was she preparing to harm herself or her baby?”
“No. She was preparing to protect both of them.”
The defense declined to cross-examine.
Any question risked repeating Claire’s words.
Rose was too young to hear the letter.
