Chapter 22 - Tom Faces Jason

During a recess, Tom entered the courthouse hallway alone.
Jason was being escorted past in handcuffs.
For months, Tom had imagined confronting him.
He imagined shouting.
Striking him.
Demanding an explanation.
When the moment came, Tom simply stood still.
Jason looked at him.
“You turned Helen against me.”
Tom almost laughed.
“You still think this happened because people turned against you.”
Jason’s expression remained hard.
“Claire was leaving with my child.”
“She was protecting her child.”
“She was my wife.”
“She was not your possession.”
Jason looked toward the courtroom doors.
“You never liked me.”
“I trusted my daughter’s choice.”
“That was your mistake.”
Tom stepped closer.
“No. My mistake was believing you loved her enough to let her be free.”
A deputy motioned for Jason to continue walking.
Before he moved, Jason spoke quietly.
“She would have taken everything.”
Tom looked at him.
There it was.
No grief.
No confusion.
Only ownership.
“She took nothing from you,” Tom said. “She finally understood what was hers.”
Jason’s jaw tightened.
“My daughter—”
“Rose will know who her mother was.”
“She’ll know I’m her father.”
Tom’s voice stayed calm.
“She’ll know what you did.”
Jason was led away.
Tom returned to Helen.
“What did he say?” she asked.
Tom sat beside her.
“The truth, finally.”
“What truth?”
“He still believes Claire belonged to him.”
Helen looked toward the defense table.
“That belief killed her.”
Tom nodded.
The prosecutor soon announced that Claire’s final letter would be read to the jury.
Not as emotional evidence.
As proof of her state of mind and fear before the crime.
Helen had read it many times.
But hearing her daughter’s words in court would be different.
