Chapter 27 - Rose’s First Birthday

Rose’s first birthday took place in Helen and Tom’s backyard.

There were no reporters.

Only family, friends, Officer Shaw, Rachel, Walter, and several nurses who had helped uncover the altered records.

A photograph of Claire stood beside the cake.

Rose wore a blue dress.

When everyone sang, she clapped before the candles were lit.

Helen laughed.

The sound surprised her.

Grief had made laughter feel disloyal for months.

Then she remembered Claire’s letter.

I hope I grow old enough to embarrass you.

Claire would have wanted noise.

Cake on the floor.

Children running through flowers.

Life continuing without permission from tragedy.

Tom gave Rose a small wooden box.

Inside was Claire’s pearl necklace.

“For when she’s older,” he said.

Helen added copies of Claire’s letters, photographs, and the recording of her first moments with Rose.

Not the kitchen video.

That would remain sealed until Rose was an adult and requested it.

Walter stood awkwardly near the fence.

Helen approached him.

“You came.”

“I wasn’t sure I should.”

“You told us about the coroner.”

“After waiting too long.”

“Yes.”

She did not erase his failure.

But she acknowledged what followed.

“You also stayed and testified.”

Walter nodded.

Officer Shaw joined them.

She had brought Rose a toy police car.

Tom laughed when Rose immediately tried to bite the wheel.

For one afternoon, Claire’s death was not the center of the family.

Claire’s daughter was.

At sunset, Helen carried Rose to the memorial photograph.

“Your mom should be holding you,” she whispered.

Rose touched the glass.

Helen’s tears came gently.

Not like the funeral.

Not like court.

May you like

They were part of love now.

👉 Rose would grow up without Claire—but she would never grow up without Claire’s truth.
