Chapter 9 - The Makeup He Chose

Grant woke cheerful.
He believed Emma’s silence meant the previous night had worked.
He brought her coffee.
He apologized without using the word hit.
“I hate what pressure turns us into.”
Emma said nothing.
He examined her cheek beneath the bathroom light.
The bruise had deepened.
Grant opened her makeup drawer.
He selected a heavy foundation and placed it beside the sink.
“You need more around the eye.”
Emma looked at his reflection.
“You’ve done this before.”
“What?”
“Covered evidence.”
Grant’s hand tightened around the counter.
“Do not start.”
He remained in the bathroom while she applied makeup.
Whenever the discoloration showed through, he made her add another layer.
At noon, he instructed her to change into the cream dress he preferred.
She put on the gray cardigan instead.
Grant objected.
“It looks ordinary.”
“I’m cold.”
He allowed it because the collar helped conceal the mark near her neck.
Throughout the afternoon, he rehearsed the dinner.
Emma would praise his leadership.
She would describe him as patient under pressure.
She would mention that employees often resisted necessary change.
Grant specifically instructed her to call Leah “emotionally unpredictable.”
Emma listened.
Every sentence became additional evidence of intent.
Her phone remained inside the cardigan pocket.
The recorder was running.
At 4:45, Grant received a notification that his company account required new authentication.
He cursed the technology department.
At 5:10, his email stopped updating.
He assumed there was maintenance.
At 5:30, he poured himself whiskey.
“Mr. Cross respects confidence,” he said.
Emma almost told him that Julian respected people who admitted uncertainty more.
She remained silent.
At 5:52, a car stopped outside.
Grant checked the window.
A black sedan.
He straightened his shirt.
“Smile.”
Emma remained beside the sofa.
“I said smile.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
Grant moved toward her.
“If he asks about your face, you walked into the bathroom door.”
“No.”
His hand rose.
The doorbell rang.
Grant lowered it.
He opened the front door with a bright professional smile.
“Mr. Cross, welcome.”
Julian stepped inside.
He looked past Grant.
He saw Emma sitting near the sofa.
The makeup no longer fully concealed the bruise.

Everything on Julian’s face disappeared except fury.
👉 Grant believed his performance was beginning, but Julian had already seen enough to end it.
