Chapter 16 - The Verdict He Couldn’t Rewrite
The jury deliberated for two days.
Emma waited at Michael Bennett’s old house with Julian.
Their stepfather had died the previous year, still believing Emma’s marriage was merely “going through a difficult season.”
Emma had never told him the full truth.
That regret remained.
Julian made coffee and did not ask Emma to discuss the trial.
For most of her life, he had tried to solve every problem.
Now he understood that support sometimes meant remaining nearby without taking control.
The call arrived shortly after three.
The jury had returned.
Grant stood as the verdicts were read.
Guilty of domestic assault.
Guilty of coercive control.
Guilty of identity theft and attempted financial fraud.
Guilty of forging medical and professional records.
Guilty of conspiracy to falsify safety documentation.
Guilty of retaliating against employees who reported danger.
Grant closed his eyes.
At sentencing, Leah described the fear inside the division.
An engineer described nearly leaving his profession.
Emma spoke last.
“You believed every part of my life could become useful to you.”
She looked directly at Grant.
“My work became something to threaten. My family became something to isolate. My injuries became evidence you planned to use against me.”
Grant stared at the table.
“You thought control meant deciding which version of me other people were allowed to see.”
Emma’s voice steadied.
“You were wrong.”
The judge sentenced Grant to a lengthy prison term.
The financial and safety-related convictions carried the greatest penalties.
He was ordered to pay restitution to Emma and affected employees.
He was permanently prohibited from working in regulated safety industries.
Martin Shaw, the compliance official who erased reports, accepted a plea agreement and also received prison time.
The private lender canceled every fraudulent obligation attached to Emma’s trust.
The divorce was finalized without Grant receiving any interest in her inheritance, home, or professional income.
As officers led him away, Grant looked toward Julian.
“You ruined me.”
Emma answered before her brother could.
“No. He arrived after you had already done that yourself.”
Outside the courthouse, reporters asked Emma whether she planned to join Mercer Dynamics.
She said no.
Her freedom did not require taking a place inside her brother’s company.
