Chapter 5 - The Report Grant Deleted
Mercer Dynamics manufactured emergency power units used in hospitals, shelters, and military field clinics.
Grant’s division was preparing to release a new compact battery system called the MX-9.
If the launch succeeded, Grant believed the senior vice presidency would be his.
One evening, he left his company laptop open on the dining table.
Emma intended only to move it away from a cup of tea.
Then a message appeared.
LEAH MORENO:
The overheating result cannot be removed from the final report. Unit 14 failed under hospital-load conditions.
Grant replied:
Replace it with the revised test. We are not delaying launch because of one defective unit.
Leah answered:
It was not one unit. Three showed thermal instability.
Grant’s response arrived seconds later.
Send the report I approved if you want to remain employed.
Emma stared at the screen.
She was not an engineer, but she understood what emergency power meant inside a hospital.
Ventilators.
Medication refrigerators.
Operating-room equipment.
A battery failure could kill people.
Grant entered the room.
He saw her looking at the messages.
His expression changed instantly.
“What are you doing?”
“Who is Leah?”
“An analyst who doesn’t understand project pressure.”
“She says three units overheated.”
Grant closed the laptop.
“Preliminary tests fail all the time.”
“Why are you telling her to remove the result?”
“Because the issue was corrected.”
“Then the final report should explain that.”
Grant stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re reading.”
“Let the safety team decide.”
He seized her shoulders.
“This product supports contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.”
“That doesn’t make the danger disappear.”
Grant shoved her backward onto the sofa.
Emma struck the armrest.
He immediately pointed at her.
“You came at me.”
She stared at him.
They both knew that was a lie.
Grant carried the laptop upstairs and changed every password.
The following morning, he told Emma never to discuss confidential company information.
“You accessed protected files. That is a crime.”
“I saw a message on our table.”
“You would still destroy my career if you repeated it.”
Emma said nothing.
Grant interpreted silence as victory.
But she remembered Leah’s full name.
During lunch, Emma searched professional directories and found a Mercer Dynamics safety analyst named Leah Moreno.
Emma wrote one message from a clinic computer.
I saw what Grant told you to change. Are patients in danger?
Leah did not answer for three days.
Then a reply arrived.
