Chapter 6 - The Employee He Tried to Silence

Leah agreed to meet Emma inside a crowded coffee shop.
She arrived carrying no company devices.
Grant had already accused her of leaking confidential information after she refused to approve the revised safety report.
“He says you’re unstable,” Leah told Emma.
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
“He said his wife has emotional problems and may contact employees to damage his reputation.”
Grant had prepared for Emma’s questions before she asked them.
Leah showed her handwritten notes.
The MX-9 units had passed normal demonstrations but overheated during extended emergency operation.
Grant feared a delay would cost him the promotion.
He ordered the engineering team to test at a lower load and present those results as final.
Two engineers objected.
One was transferred.
The other resigned after Grant threatened to accuse him of stealing proprietary data.
Leah reported the problem through Mercer Dynamics’ internal ethics line.
The complaint disappeared.
Days later, Grant produced performance warnings against her.
“He knows someone in compliance,” Leah said.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma asked why Leah had not contacted Julian directly.
“Employees do not email the CEO because their director is dishonest. We are supposed to trust the system.”
Emma understood that answer more deeply than Leah realized.
She was also supposed to trust a system.
Marriage.
Medical care.
Police.
The company.
Grant survived because frightened people believed they had to use the correct door, even when he controlled who opened it.
Leah noticed the makeup covering Emma’s cheek.
“Did he do that?”
Emma looked away.
Leah did not force her to answer.
She slid a small drive across the table.
It contained copies of the original test results, Grant’s instructions, and the complaints that had been deleted from the system.
“I kept them because I thought one day someone might listen.”
Emma closed her fingers around the drive.
Grant checked her location that afternoon.
She told him she had been at a medical-supply store.
He demanded a receipt.
Emma had anticipated that.
She gave him one from the shop beside the coffeehouse.
For the first time, she successfully lied to protect herself.
That night, Grant received an email stating that Mercer Dynamics’ CEO would personally review the three final candidates for senior vice president.
Grant smiled for the first time in weeks.
“Julian Cross is finally going to see what I can do.”
Emma’s hand tightened around her glass.
Grant noticed.
“Do you know something?”
“No.”
She was no longer hiding only a brother.

She was hiding the evidence that could stop a dangerous product launch.
👉 Grant wanted one private dinner to secure his promotion, and he decided Emma’s home would become the stage.
