Chapter 4 - The First Bruise She Covered

The first bruise appeared after a company banquet.

Grant had expected Emma to charm one of Mercer Dynamics’ board members.

Instead, she spent most of the evening helping a server whose hand had been burned by a hot tray.

On the drive home, Grant said she had embarrassed him.

“She was hurt.”

“She was staff.”

“She was a person.”

Grant struck the steering wheel.

“You always need to be the moral center of every room.”

At home, Emma tried to walk away.

Grant grabbed her upper arm and pushed her against the hallway wall.

Her shoulder struck the picture frame.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Grant released her.

He looked horrified.

Then he began crying.

He blamed alcohol.

Pressure.

His fear that the promotion would go to someone less qualified.

Emma slept in the guest room.

The following morning, Grant brought ice and breakfast.

He promised counseling.

He booked one appointment, attended half of it, and declared the therapist biased.

The bruise on Emma’s shoulder remained hidden beneath her uniform.

The second incident happened two months later.

Grant read a message from Emma’s coworker asking whether she was safe.

He accused Emma of discussing private marital problems.

When she reached for the phone, he slapped her.

This time, the bruise appeared on her face.

Grant drove her to urgent care himself.

He sat beside her while she told the physician she had walked into a cabinet door.

The doctor looked unconvinced.

She gave Emma a card with a domestic-violence hotline.

Grant found the card that evening.

He tore it in half.

“You’re trying to ruin me.”

“I didn’t ask for it.”

“You kept it.”

He then explained what would happen if Emma accused him.

Mercer Dynamics would investigate.

Grant would lose his career.

Employees depending on his division might lose jobs.

People would say Emma had used Julian to punish her husband.

Grant still did not know Julian’s identity.

He believed Emma’s brother was simply an ordinary man who might create a public scene.

Emma allowed that misunderstanding to continue.

It became the hiding place where Grant felt safest.

After every incident, he ordered her to cover the marks.

She became skilled with concealer.

Coworkers praised her makeup.

Grant praised her loyalty.

But Emma began photographing each bruise before it faded.
