Chapter 7 - The Dinner Grant Couldn’t Afford to Fail

Grant requested a meeting with Julian through the executive office.
The assistant offered twenty minutes at headquarters.
Grant declined.
He said a private dinner would allow him to present a broader vision for the division.
He listed his home as the location.
The invitation eventually reached Julian.
The address meant nothing to him.
Emma had moved after marriage and avoided giving her brother details because Grant monitored their limited contact.
Julian accepted provisionally for six o’clock Friday.
Grant treated the visit as confirmation that the promotion was his.
He ordered expensive wine.
Rented artwork.
Replaced the living-room furniture.
He instructed Emma to take Friday off and prepare dinner.
“I’m scheduled at the clinic.”
“Then change it.”
“My patients have waited weeks.”
“This meeting changes our lives.”
“No. It changes your job.”
Grant stared at her.
“You are my wife. My success is our success.”
Emma remembered the MX-9 reports.
“Does Julian know about the safety failures?”
Grant’s hand stopped over the wine bottle.
“What did you say?”
“I asked a question.”
“Do not mention the project.”
“If it’s safe, why are you afraid of questions?”
Grant swept a glass from the counter.
It shattered against the floor.
Emma flinched.
He moved close enough that she could feel his breath.
“You will smile. You will serve dinner. You will tell him I am disciplined, loyal, and impossible to replace.”
“And if I don’t?”
Grant looked at her with terrifying calm.
“You know how easily people believe a husband when he says his wife is unstable.”
That night, Emma opened the encrypted folder containing the bruise photographs.
She added the MX-9 files Leah had given her.
Then she wrote a message to Julian.
She deleted it before sending.
For years, she had feared he would take over.
Make decisions.
Turn her private pain into a corporate war.
But Grant had already turned the marriage into part of his career.
Emma could no longer separate the two.
Thursday evening, Julian’s executive assistant called Grant.
The dinner was confirmed.
Grant opened champagne.
He kissed Emma’s forehead.
“This is the last difficult week we will ever have.”
Emma understood what he meant.
Once promoted, Grant believed no one could challenge him.

She hid Leah’s drive inside the lining of her work bag.
👉 The night before the dinner, Grant discovered that Emma had spoken to someone at Mercer Dynamics—and the bruise he left would become impossible to hide.
