Chapter 12 - The Woman Grant Called Unstable
Leah Moreno entered Mercer Dynamics headquarters for the first time in six weeks.
She had been placed on forced leave after Grant accused her of misconduct.
Now the independent board invited her to testify.
Leah brought two engineers with her.
Both confirmed the overheating failures.
One described how Grant ordered him to destroy test components.
The other produced an email in which Grant threatened to block future employment references.
The review expanded.
Employees from Grant’s previous projects began coming forward.
A project coordinator said Grant demanded unpaid work and then claimed her results as his own.
A junior manager described being cornered after refusing to alter an expense report.
A technician showed investigators photographs of damaged components Grant ordered shipped as “fully tested.”
Grant’s conduct had survived because he isolated each person.
He told Leah that engineers opposed her.
He told engineers that Leah had approved the report.
He told compliance the employees were personally loyal to Emma.
He told Emma everyone at work respected him.
Each person believed they were standing alone.
Emma understood the method.
Grant ran his department the way he ran their marriage.
Confuse.
Separate.
Threaten.
Rewrite.
The board halted the MX-9 release.
Independent testing confirmed the system could overheat during extended high-load use.
No units had yet been installed in hospitals.
Emma felt relief so sharp it made her cry.
Her decision had not only changed her life.
It had prevented dangerous equipment from reaching patients.
Grant’s attorney argued the safety problem had been exaggerated by employees seeking revenge.
Then Alicia presented the original complaint history.
The complaint had been deleted using credentials belonging to Deputy Compliance Director Martin Shaw.
Shaw denied knowing Grant.
Financial records showed Grant had paid his gambling debts twice.
Shaw had erased complaints in exchange for cash and promises of a position in Grant’s future company.
Both men were charged with conspiracy to falsify safety records.
Leah’s personnel file was cleared.
The board offered her Grant’s former directorship.
She declined.
“I want the engineering authority to stop a release without risking a career.”
Mercer Dynamics created an independent product-safety office.
Leah agreed to lead it.
Outside the hearing, she found Emma waiting.
“You believed me,” Leah said.
