Chapter 15 - Why Didn’t You Leave?

Grant’s trial began ten months later.

He faced charges for domestic assault, coercive control, identity theft, attempted fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to falsify product-safety records.

The courtroom remained full.

Former employees occupied one side.

Emma sat with the victim advocate on the other.

Grant’s attorney began with the question Emma had feared.

“If your husband was so dangerous, why did you remain in the house?”

Emma looked toward the jury.

“Because he did not become dangerous all at once.”

The attorney asked why she had hidden Julian’s identity.

“Privacy.”

“Or because you wanted the option of using the CEO against your husband?”

“No.”

“You photographed injuries for years but never called police.”

“I was afraid.”

“You continued attending dinners with Mr. Hale.”

“Yes.”

“You sent loving messages.”

“Yes.”

“Does that sound like fear?”

Emma answered quietly.

“It sounds like someone trying to prevent the next incident.”

The prosecutor then played Grant’s recordings.

His voice ordering Emma to cover the bruise.

His instructions for the dinner.

His demand that she call Leah unstable.

His threat to describe her as incompetent.

The defense attorney stopped asking why Emma had stayed.

Leah testified about the safety reports.

Engineers confirmed the MX-9 failures.

Bank investigators explained the forged trust documents.

Emma’s clinic director disproved the medication accusation.

Julian testified last.

Grant’s attorney focused on the punch.

“You hated my client before reviewing the evidence.”

“I did not know he was my sister’s husband until that morning.”

“You struck him immediately.”

“Yes.”

“So this investigation began with personal rage.”

“No. My personal failure occurred in one living room. The corporate evidence existed before I entered it.”

Independent counsel confirmed that conclusion.

The board’s review had proceeded without Julian’s involvement.

Grant chose to testify.

He described Emma as fragile and easily influenced by her brother.

The prosecutor showed him the message he wrote.

NO CLINIC. NO BROTHER. NO MONEY WITHOUT MY APPROVAL.

Grant claimed it was an emotional journal entry.

Then the prosecutor displayed the loan application, licensing complaint, and psychiatric petition matching each line.

The journal was not emotion.

It was a checklist.
