Chapter 2 - The Brother With a Different Name
Emma Bennett and Julian Cross shared the same mother but not the same father.
Julian was twelve when Emma was born.
His father had died young, and he kept the Cross surname.
Emma carried the name of her own father, Michael Bennett, a quiet public-school teacher who raised both children without treating Julian as someone else’s son.
When their mother died, Julian was twenty-seven.
Emma was fifteen.
Michael remained her legal guardian, but Julian became the person she called whenever the world felt too large.
He attended parent conferences.
Taught her to drive.
Sat outside the emergency room when she needed surgery at nineteen.
Years later, Julian became chief executive of Mercer Dynamics, one of the country’s largest manufacturers of emergency power and medical-support equipment.
His position made the Cross name recognizable.
It also brought threats, lawsuits, and unwanted attention.
Emma wanted no part of the public life surrounding him.
She became a pediatric occupational therapist and continued using Bennett.
She rarely attended corporate events.
There were no family photographs on Julian’s official social-media pages.
When Emma met Grant, she told him she had an older brother named Julian.
Grant asked whether Julian was successful.
Emma said yes.
He asked whether Julian could help them financially.
Emma changed the subject.
Grant never asked again.
He assumed Julian was a small-business owner in another state.
Emma intended to introduce them after the wedding, but Julian spent most of that year overseeing an overseas merger.
Then Grant began criticizing every person Emma trusted.
He called her friends intrusive.
He complained that Michael Bennett treated him like a stranger.
Whenever Emma mentioned Julian, Grant became irritated.
“Your brother doesn’t care enough to visit,” he said.
Emma knew Julian cared.
But she had hidden the worst parts of the marriage from him.
She was ashamed.
She also knew Julian’s instinct would be to intervene, and Grant had convinced her that intervention would destroy both men’s careers.
Grant worked at Mercer Dynamics.
If Julian discovered the abuse, Grant said he would accuse Emma of using family influence against him.
“You’ll make me look like a man who married the CEO’s sister for a promotion,” he warned.
The accusation frightened Emma because it sounded plausible.
So she protected Grant from a connection he did not even know existed.
Meanwhile, Julian believed his sister was simply private and busy.
