Chapter 1 - The Boss at the Door
“Don’t touch my sister again.”
Julian Cross’s fist struck Grant Hale before Grant could finish saying welcome.
The punch drove Grant backward into the white living-room wall.
He stumbled, one hand flying to his face, all the arrogance disappearing from his expression.
“Mr. Cross?”
Julian did not answer.
He moved between Grant and the woman sitting beside the sofa.
Emma Hale’s gray cardigan had slipped from one shoulder. Her hair was tangled, her eyes were red, and a dark bruise spread across her cheek beneath the makeup Grant had forced her to wear.
She looked up at Julian.
For the first time that morning, relief replaced fear.
Grant stared from his wife to the chief executive officer of Mercer Dynamics.
“You’re her brother?”
Emma raised her phone with a trembling hand.
The screen showed photographs of older bruises, threatening messages, a hospital report, and the final text she had sent at 4:13 that morning.
HE DID IT AGAIN. COME AT SIX.
“I sent him everything,” she said.
Two members of Mercer Dynamics’ legal department entered behind Julian.
A police officer followed them carrying an emergency protective order.
One lawyer placed a folder on the coffee table.
INTERNAL MISCONDUCT REVIEW—GRANT HALE.
Grant’s face turned white.
He had spent the morning ordering Emma to conceal the bruise because Julian Cross was coming to dinner.
Grant believed the CEO’s visit would secure the promotion he had chased for two years.
Instead, Julian had arrived with evidence.
The officer stepped toward Grant.
Julian remained in front of Emma, his hands now lowered.
“Your promotion is over,” he said.
Grant looked at Emma as though she had become a stranger.
“You lied to me.”
Emma slowly pushed herself upright.
“No. You never cared enough to ask who my family was.”
The officer ordered Grant to place his hands where they could be seen.
Julian bent down and offered Emma his hand.
She took it.
Grant had believed his wife was isolated, financially dependent, and too ashamed to expose him.
He had been wrong about all three.
