Chapter 14 - The Complaint Against Emma
The scheduled email accused Emma of stealing controlled medication from her clinic.
It included photographs of pill bottles in her work bag and a patient log bearing her signature.
The evidence looked convincing.
It was false.
One bottle had been photographed inside Grant’s company office.
The patient log had been digitally altered.
Grant had copied Emma’s signature from insurance forms.
He planned to report her after securing the private loan against her trust.
If Emma lost her professional license, she would become financially and emotionally dependent on him.
His private notes described the strategy.
NO CLINIC. NO BROTHER. NO MONEY WITHOUT MY APPROVAL.
Grant still did not know who Julian was when he wrote it.
The words “no brother” referred to cutting Emma off from family entirely.
He had intended to change her phone number after the promotion and move them to another city.
Emma read the note in the prosecutor’s office.
Each line felt like a door he had planned to lock.
The licensing board reviewed the evidence and confirmed the report was fabricated.
Emma’s clinic director provided medication audits proving nothing was missing.
Grant’s charges expanded again.
Witness intimidation.
Attempted professional sabotage.

Emma asked the prosecutor whether people would believe she had remained unaware of such a detailed plan.
“Victims often see incidents,” the prosecutor said. “The person causing them sees a strategy.”
That distinction helped Emma understand her own memories.
Grant breaking her phone had not been about anger alone.
It gave him access to the replacement.
Grant criticizing Julian had not been jealousy alone.
It discouraged contact.
Grant pushing her to reduce clinic hours had not been concern alone.
It weakened her independence.
The pattern had been invisible because Emma lived inside it one day at a time.
At home, she removed the heavy curtains Grant chose.
Sunlight filled the living room.

Emma considered repairing it.
She decided to wait until the trial ended.
