Chapter 8 - The Bruise They Called an Accident

Trevor released Brooke only after Victoria told him the marks would be difficult to explain.
Five dark fingerprints remained around her wrist.
Victoria brought ice from the kitchen.
She did not apologize.
“You frightened him,” she said.
“He grabbed me.”
“You entered restricted files.”
“My husband’s files.”
Victoria pressed the ice against Brooke’s skin.
“Ethan will be home in six weeks. Sign the agreement, and these unpleasant misunderstandings end.”
Brooke pulled her arm away.
“I will tell him everything.”
“Using what evidence?”
Brooke did not answer.
Victoria watched her carefully.
For the next several days, Brooke pretended to retreat.
She stopped questioning Trevor.
She apologized for entering the safe.
She allowed Victoria to believe fear had defeated her.
At night, she recorded their conversations using the old phone.
Trevor discussed the transfer openly.
He believed Brooke had become powerless.
“The shares move Friday,” he told Victoria.
“What about her signature?”
“She will sign.”
“And Ethan?”
“His digital approvals are complete.”
“The attorney may verify.”
“I already sent confirmation from Ethan’s email.”
Victoria poured herself a drink.
“Once the transfer closes, Brooke leaves.”
“We need her until Ethan returns.”
“No. We need her to appear unstable before he returns.”
Brooke listened from the hallway.
Trevor continued.
“We’ll say she signed voluntarily, panicked after seeing the debt and attacked us.”
“And the bruises?”
“She bruises easily.”
Victoria laughed softly.
Brooke saved the recording.
The following afternoon, she tried to leave the penthouse.
A security guard stopped her in the lobby.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Brooks. Your mother-in-law asked that we contact her if you left without assistance.”
“I am not a patient.”
The guard looked embarrassed.
“I was told there were safety concerns.”
“Call the police.”
Victoria stepped from the private elevator before he could move.
She guided Brooke back upstairs with one hand on her elbow.
Inside the penthouse, her grip tightened.
“You embarrassed me.”
“You imprisoned me.”
“You are free to leave after you sign.”
Trevor waited in the living room with the documents.
A pen lay on the table.
Brooke looked toward the old phone hidden beneath her clothing.
Its recorder was already running.
Trevor pushed the papers closer.
“Sign.”
“No.”
He stood.
Victoria locked the penthouse doors.

Brooke understood that the quiet coercion had ended.
👉 The next signature would be taken by force, and Brooke’s hidden recording would become the only witness inside the penthouse.
