Chapter 13 - What Mercury Was Built to Hide

The attorney spread the Mercury documents across the dining table.
Police investigators arrived shortly after midnight.
Brooke remained in the bedroom with a female officer and a paramedic.
Ethan stayed beside her until she asked him to go hear the truth.
Mercury Capital had borrowed ninety million dollars from private lenders.
The loans financed Trevor’s failed developments, luxury travel and gambling losses disguised as investment fees.
Victoria knew about the debt.
She had signed personal guarantees on several early loans.
When the lenders threatened legal action, Trevor created a solution.
Transfer Ethan’s valuable company shares into Mercury.
Use the shares to secure the debt.
Place Ethan’s electronic signature on the guarantees.
Obtain Brooke’s spousal consent so she could not later claim the transfer had been hidden from the marriage.
Once completed, Mercury would appear solvent.
Trevor would retain voting control through a special management agreement.
Victoria would escape her guarantees.
Ethan would carry the risk.
If Mercury collapsed, lenders could seize Ethan’s shares.
Trevor and Victoria would keep millions already moved into protected accounts.
Brooke listened from the doorway, wearing Ethan’s jacket over her nightgown.
“You planned to blame me,” she said.
Trevor looked away.
The attorney answered for him.
A draft internal report described Brooke as the person who introduced Mercury to the family.
Another document claimed she pressured Ethan to transfer the shares.
Her forced signature was supposed to become proof of participation.
Victoria had gathered photographs and medical claims to create two possible stories.
If Brooke remained silent, they would blame her for the fraud.
If she spoke, they would call her unstable.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“You were going to send me home to a ruined company, a criminal investigation and a wife everyone believed had betrayed me.”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“We were saving the family.”
“Which family?”
“Your father’s company.”
“My father left control to me.”
“He made that decision while he was sick.”
“He made it because he knew Trevor.”
Trevor slammed his hand on the table.
“You abandoned the company for the military!”
“I appointed professionals.”
“You left me beneath you.”
“You were beneath me because you stole from everyone who trusted you.”
Police collected the documents.
The old smartwatch showed every fraudulent approval.
The jacket carried Trevor’s fingerprints and traces of the after-hours access seal used inside the records vault.
The old phone contained the assault recording.
Victoria’s carefully prepared story collapsed before sunrise.
But one question remained.
