Chapter 6 - The Debt Inside Mercury

Brooke spent the night studying the transfer documents.

Mercury Capital was not a normal investment company.

It was a shell designed to receive Ethan’s controlling shares in the family business.

In return, Mercury would issue him a smaller interest in a new combined entity.

The documents described the exchange as equal.

It was not.

Mercury carried more than ninety million dollars in hidden debt.

If the transfer closed, Ethan’s valuable shares would secure that debt.

Trevor would control the voting rights.

Victoria would receive monthly payments.

Ethan would return from deployment to discover that he still appeared wealthy on paper but controlled almost nothing.

Worse, Brooke’s spousal consent stated that she had reviewed the transaction independently and waived any marital claim.

Her signature would protect Trevor from a future lawsuit.

Brooke called the family attorney again.

This time, the assistant transferred her.

Before the attorney answered, the call disconnected.

Trevor appeared in the doorway holding the router cable.

“Internet problem,” he said.

Brooke looked at the unplugged cable.

“My cell call dropped.”

“The signal is unreliable.”

“You disconnected the network because I called the attorney.”

Trevor shrugged.

“You are involving yourself in matters you don’t understand.”

“I understand debt.”

“You taught art history for three years.”

“My father was a forensic accountant.”

That surprised him.

Brooke had rarely spoken about her father’s work.

She had grown up watching him trace money through shell companies and fraudulent transfers.

Trevor stepped inside.

“Then your father should have taught you not to interfere with powerful people.”

Brooke raised her phone.

“Was that a threat?”

“It was advice.”

Victoria entered behind him.

“You have two choices. Sign willingly, or Ethan returns to a psychiatric emergency involving his wife.”

Brooke laughed once in disbelief.

“You think he will believe you?”

Victoria placed a folder on the bed.

Inside were photographs of Brooke crying.

Statements from staff claiming she shouted.

A letter from the building physician describing “reported emotional instability.”

The physician had never examined her.

“You have been preparing this,” Brooke whispered.

“We have been protecting Ethan.”

“By stealing his company?”

“By protecting it from a wife who will eventually take half.”

Brooke closed the folder.

“I am not signing.”

Victoria’s face became cold.

“Then you will learn how quickly a silent home can become a very lonely place.”

The next morning, Brooke’s bank card stopped working.

Her car was removed from the garage.

Building security was told she was under medical observation and should not leave alone.

👉 Victoria had turned the penthouse into a prison without locking a single door, but Brooke still had the old phone they did not know existed.
