Chapter 17 - Brooke’s Voice

The courtroom was crowded when Brooke took the witness stand.

Victoria sat beside her attorney in a dark suit.

Trevor sat at a separate table.

Neither looked at Brooke.

The prosecutor began with the simplest question.

“Why did you remain in the penthouse?”

“Because my husband was deployed, my money was frozen, building security had been told I was unstable and every attempt to contact outside help was intercepted.”

“Why did you not fight harder?”

Brooke looked toward the jury.

“I did fight. I documented. I questioned. I tried to leave. I used the tools I had.”

She described Victoria’s control.

Trevor’s threats.

The forced signature.

The moment her wrist twisted beneath his hand.

She described the shame of covering bruises for Ethan’s call.

“I was afraid he would come home and see exactly what they had trained him to see—a grieving wife who could not be trusted.”

The prosecutor asked, “What changed when Ethan entered the bedroom?”

Brooke looked at her husband.

“He asked who hurt me.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“And then?”

“He waited for my answer.”

The defense attorney tried to portray Brooke as financially motivated.

“You now stand to benefit from Trevor’s removal, correct?”

“No.”

“Your husband retains control of the company.”

“My husband already controlled it.”

“Your position improved.”

“My position was his wife. That should have been enough to prevent people from hurting me.”

The attorney displayed the signed consent form.

“You acknowledge that this is your handwriting?”

“I acknowledge Trevor moved my hand.”

“You could have refused to speak during the notary session.”

“I had already refused. The bruises show what happened afterward.”

The attorney suggested Brooke invented the assault after discovering Mercury’s debt.

The prosecutor played the full recording.

Trevor’s voice ordered her to sign.

Victoria told her to cover the marks.

Brooke’s crying continued after they left the room.

No one could call that performance.

Victoria finally looked at Brooke.

For the first time, shame appeared on her face.

During a break, she asked her attorney to deliver a message.

Tell Brooke I am sorry.

Brooke read it.

Then she wrote one sentence beneath it.

An apology offered after the evidence is heard does not erase the silence you forced before it existed.

She returned the note.

At the end of her testimony, Brooke walked past Victoria without lowering her eyes.

Ethan waited beyond the courtroom doors.

He did not tell her she had been brave.

He simply opened his arms.

Brooke stepped into them.

👉 With Brooke’s testimony complete, the verdict would decide whether the family’s wealth could still protect the people who had used it as a weapon.
