Chapter 16 - Trevor’s Last Betrayal
Trevor claimed Victoria had ordered the fraud.
He said she feared losing her lifestyle after Ethan’s deployment.
He described himself as a frightened son obeying a controlling mother.
For several hours, investigators considered whether he might cooperate.
Then the forensic team recovered deleted messages from Mercury’s server.
The earliest message had been sent by Trevor.
Mother, Ethan will never give me control voluntarily. We need to move the shares while he is gone.
Victoria replied:
Brooke will never agree.
Trevor answered:
Then we make her agreement irrelevant.
The messages continued for months.
Trevor designed Mercury.
Trevor recruited the chief operating officer.
Trevor copied Ethan’s signature.
Trevor discovered the smartwatch could approve account access.
Victoria joined the conspiracy willingly, but she had not created it.
Another message revealed the moment Trevor decided to use Brooke as the scapegoat.
She keeps asking questions. If the transfer fails, we say it was her idea. Her medical history gives us everything we need.
Trevor’s cooperation offer was withdrawn.
Victoria’s attorney then tried the opposite strategy.
She claimed Trevor had manipulated an elderly mother.
The prosecutor produced recordings of Victoria directing Brooke to cover her bruises and describing how they would convince Ethan she was unstable.
Neither could escape by blaming the other.
During the final pretrial hearing, Ethan saw Trevor in the courthouse hallway.
His brother looked thinner.
The arrogance had faded.
“You’re really going to let them send me to prison?” Trevor asked.
Ethan stopped.
“You forced my wife to sign a fraudulent agreement.”
“I never meant for her to get badly hurt.”
“You wore my uniform.”
“It was a jacket.”
“It represents years of service you used as a disguise.”
Trevor looked around.
“Dad wanted us to run the company together.”
“Dad left me control because he knew you would confuse ownership with entitlement.”
“You always got everything.”
“I got responsibility.”
“You got praised.”
“And you received chances.”
Trevor’s face tightened.
“If Brooke had signed willingly, none of this would have happened.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“That sentence is why I will never help you avoid the consequences.”
He walked away.
Inside the courtroom, the judge ruled that the old phone recordings, smartwatch logs, security footage and medical evidence were all admissible.
The case would proceed.
Brooke could choose to testify publicly or submit a protected recorded statement.
She chose to enter the courtroom.
