Chapter 11 - Ethan’s Silent Investigation

The family attorney called Ethan through a secure military line.

“Your brother filed a transfer request.”

“Using what authority?”

“Your electronic signature and Brooke’s spousal consent.”

“I signed nothing.”

The attorney became silent.

“Are you certain?”

“I am deployed in another country.”

“The records show multiple approvals through your secure account.”

“My old smartwatch.”

“What about it?”

“I left it in the penthouse safe.”

The attorney understood immediately.

He requested the login history.

Every approval originated from the penthouse or the company’s private records floor.

Security footage showed a man in Ethan’s military jacket entering the vault after midnight.

The attorney sent Ethan a still image.

Ethan studied it.

The body shape was wrong.

The man was slightly shorter.

The jacket hung differently across his shoulders.

It was Trevor.

Ethan contacted his commanding officer and requested emergency leave.

He could not explain everything over an unsecured connection.

He provided the attorney with a limited power to freeze any uncompleted transfer if fraud was confirmed.

But the attorney needed direct evidence of coercion before he could challenge Brooke’s notarized consent.

The notary record claimed Brooke signed voluntarily.

The video showed her seated at a table, bruises concealed beneath clothing.

Victoria stood behind the camera.

Trevor appeared only as a witness.

Brooke said yes when asked whether she understood the document.

Her eyes remained fixed on someone outside the frame.

The attorney noticed her right hand.

It was trembling.

The transfer had entered its final review.

Less than seventy-two hours remained before Mercury would gain control.

Ethan booked the first military transport home.

He told no one in his family.

Victoria believed he would return ten days later.

During the flight, Ethan listened to every voicemail Brooke had sent during the deployment.

Several had been strangely short.

Others ended abruptly.

One contained a faint voice after Brooke thought the call had ended.

Trevor said, “Next time, sound grateful.”

Ethan played the recording again.

His anger became cold and focused.

He instructed the attorney to arrange private security at the penthouse.

He also contacted a military legal assistance officer and local law enforcement.

There was not yet enough evidence for arrests.

But if Brooke was being confined or assaulted, Ethan wanted witnesses nearby.

When his plane landed, the attorney sent one final message.

Mercury transfer scheduled for midnight.

Ethan looked at the time.

9:14 p.m.

He went directly to the penthouse.

👉 Victoria expected ten more days to control Brooke’s story, but Ethan was already riding the elevator toward the bedroom where they had hidden the truth.
