Chapter 2 - The Promise Before Deployment

The night before Ethan left, he and Brooke stood alone on the penthouse balcony.
The city spread beneath them in a field of gold and white lights.
Ethan rested both hands on Brooke’s waist.
“Eight months,” he said. “Then I come home and annoy you every day for the rest of our lives.”
Brooke smiled through her tears.
“You already do that from another country.”
He kissed her forehead.
They had been married for four years.
Brooke understood deployments. She understood long silences, interrupted calls and nights spent wondering whether Ethan was safe.
What she did not understand was his family.
Victoria had never openly welcomed her.
She had perfected something quieter.
A smile followed by an insult.
A compliment that became a warning.
A family dinner where Brooke’s chair was always slightly separated from everyone else.
Trevor was worse.
He treated the family business like a private inheritance waiting for Ethan to disappear.
Their late father had built a real estate and investment company worth hundreds of millions.
After his death, Ethan received the controlling interest.
Victoria received lifetime income.
Trevor received a smaller share and an executive position.
Ethan did not run the company daily. He remained in military service and trusted professional managers to protect it.
That trust irritated Trevor.
“You should be leading the company,” Brooke once told Ethan.
“I lead soldiers,” he answered. “Trevor can handle office meetings.”
Brooke never believed Trevor could handle anything he could not exploit.
On the morning Ethan left, Victoria arrived unexpectedly.
“You shouldn’t stay alone,” she told Brooke. “I’ll move into one of the guest rooms.”
“That isn’t necessary.”
“It is what Ethan wants.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“I said she could visit.”
Victoria smiled.
“Visit, stay—what difference does it make?”
Brooke almost objected.
Then she saw Ethan’s concern.
He was leaving his wife behind after Brooke had recently suffered a painful miscarriage. He wanted someone nearby.
Brooke agreed.
Trevor appeared before Ethan left for the airport.
He hugged his brother.
“I’ll watch the company.”
Then he turned toward Brooke.
“And we’ll watch your wife.”
The words sounded like a joke.
Brooke forced a smile.
Ethan did not notice the way Trevor looked past her, toward the penthouse office where the family trust documents were stored.
Before stepping into the elevator, Ethan handed Brooke a spare key.
“Everything important is in the office safe.”
Victoria saw the key.
May you like
So did Trevor.
👉 Ethan left believing the key would protect Brooke, but Victoria had already decided that nothing inside the penthouse truly belonged to her.
