Chapter 5 - The First Threat

Brooke locked herself in the bathroom with her phone.
Trevor stood outside.
“Open the door.”
“No.”
“You are misunderstanding a routine login.”
“Using Ethan’s account is not routine.”
Victoria joined him in the hallway.
“Brooke, you are creating unnecessary drama.”
“Call Ethan.”
“He is in a restricted location.”
“Then call the attorney.”
“We do not need an attorney because you saw a login notification.”
Brooke uploaded the photograph to a cloud account.
She deleted the image from her phone.
Then she opened the door.
Trevor took the phone from her hand.
She did not fight him.
He searched the gallery.
The photograph was gone.
Trevor looked at her.
“Where is it?”
“I deleted it.”
He did not believe her.
Victoria touched his arm.
“That’s enough.”
Trevor returned the phone.
Brooke expected Victoria to apologize.
Instead, her mother-in-law stepped into the bathroom and closed the door behind them.
“You need to understand something,” Victoria said.
“Your marriage exists because Ethan wanted a normal life between deployments. Do not confuse that with permanent power.”
Brooke stared at her.
“You think he will leave me because I discovered what Trevor is doing?”
“I think Ethan will believe evidence.”
“So do I.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“You should be careful what you call evidence. A grieving woman searching through company records can look unstable.”
Brooke felt cold.
They were not simply accessing Ethan’s accounts.
They were preparing a story about her.
Over the next two weeks, Victoria began documenting Brooke’s behavior.
She took photographs whenever Brooke cried after calls with Ethan.
She filmed Brooke arguing with Trevor.
She told the building physician that Brooke was having “episodes.”
Trevor sent Ethan messages claiming Brooke was sleeping poorly and imagining financial conspiracies.
Brooke discovered one message on a tablet left open in the office.
Your wife needs psychiatric help before she hurts herself or someone else.
Ethan replied:
I spoke to Brooke yesterday. She sounded fine.
Trevor answered:
She hides it from you.
Brooke photographed the exchange.
This time, she stored the file on an old phone Ethan had given her years earlier.
The phone had no active service.
It remained invisible to Trevor’s network monitoring.
She hid it inside the lining beneath the bed.
Brooke began saving everything there.
Emails.
Documents.
Recordings.
Photographs of bruises that had not happened yet.
Then Victoria presented her with the first transfer agreement.
“We need your signature,” she said.
Brooke read the heading.
MERCURY CAPITAL HOLDINGS — SPOUSAL CONSENT AND ASSET TRANSFER.
She pushed the document back.
“No.”
Victoria smiled.

“You should read the consequences before answering.”
👉 The transfer did not merely move company shares—it would make Brooke legally responsible for a debt Trevor had already hidden inside Mercury Capital.
