Chapter 1 - Who Did This to You?
“Who did this to you?”
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
That made the question more terrifying.
Brooke sat curled against the headboard of their penthouse bed, clutching the white sheet against her body. Her hair was tangled. Her nightgown hung crookedly from one shoulder.
Dark bruises covered her upper arms.
More spread across her thigh and ankle.
Ethan knelt beside her, still wearing the white shirt he had traveled home in. His military jacket, heavy with ribbons and medals, lay across the bed between them.
He had returned from deployment less than an hour earlier.
His mother, Victoria, and his younger brother, Trevor, stood in the bedroom doorway.
Neither moved.
Brooke tried to pull the sheet higher.
“She’s just unstable,” Victoria said. “You know how emotional she becomes.”
Ethan did not look at his mother.
His eyes remained on Brooke.
“Did you fall?”
Brooke’s lips trembled.
She glanced toward Victoria, then quickly looked away.
That single terrified glance gave Ethan his answer.
He lowered the sheet just enough to see the bruising on Brooke’s leg.
Victoria stepped forward.
“You’re frightening her.”
Ethan reached toward his military jacket.
Something hard shifted inside its pocket.
He pulled out his old smartwatch.
The watch was supposed to be locked inside a safe.
Brooke slowly opened one hand beneath the blanket.
An outdated phone lay against her palm.
Its cracked screen showed photographs of a transfer agreement.
MERCURY CAPITAL HOLDINGS.
Below the company name was Ethan’s signature.
It was not his.
Another page carried Brooke’s signature.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t sign alone.”
Ethan took the phone.
There were photographs, account numbers and an audio file nearly forty minutes long.
He sent everything to the family attorney.
In the hallway outside, the attorney’s phone vibrated. He opened the documents, saw Trevor’s name and immediately called the security team waiting downstairs.
“Seal every account.”
The attorney appeared in the doorway holding a thick file.
Ethan rose and moved in front of Brooke.
Trevor took half a step backward.
Ethan picked up the military jacket.
He looked at the smartwatch.
Then he stared at his brother.
“You wore my jacket?”
Trevor’s face changed.

And Brooke realized that, for the first time in three months, someone finally believed her.
