Chapter 9 - THE ORDER TO DELAY CARE
The hospital’s digital audit showed Claire’s assistant had contacted the clinic using a forged authorization.
The message instructed staff to cancel Hannah’s high-risk pregnancy consultation.
It also requested that any emergency call from the Carver estate be routed through Claire.
The clinic refused.
But someone inside the estate had removed Hannah’s doctor’s note from the household medical file.
That was why the kitchen staff believed Claire when she said Hannah was exaggerating.
Martin compared access logs.
Only three people opened the file.
Claire.
Victor.
And Dr. Adrian Vale, a Beaumont physician temporarily assigned to the estate.
Daniel ordered Vale detained for questioning.
Vale insisted he had only followed instructions.
“Whose instructions?” Daniel asked.
“Mrs. Carver’s.”
“There is no Mrs. Carver.”
Vale looked toward Claire.
That answer ended any pretense that staff had made innocent mistakes.
Claire had been acting as Daniel’s wife before the wedding.
She issued medical directives.
Approved staff dismissals.
Accessed trust documents.
Moved security officers.
Victor used her unofficial authority to replace loyal Carver employees with Beaumont men.
Daniel returned to Hannah’s room after midnight.
She was awake.
“You should rest,” he said.
“So should you.”
“I don’t deserve rest.”
Hannah looked at him.
“You didn’t know.”
“I chose not to question what was convenient.”
The words surprised her.
Daniel explained that the forged message fit what Claire had been telling him for months.
Hannah feared his life.
Hannah wanted someone safer.
Hannah would always choose freedom over him.
“He said you chose her,” Hannah whispered.
“I believed you rejected me. Then I accepted the alliance because I thought love was no longer part of my future.”
“And you let her move into your home.”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
Daniel did not disguise it.
“I failed you before I knew you were being threatened.”
Hannah rested a hand on her belly.
“Our child cannot grow up inside excuses.”
“I know.”
She looked directly at him.
“Protecting me now does not erase that you stopped looking for me.”
Daniel accepted the judgment.
“What do you need?”
“The truth. All of it.”
He told her about the alliance.
The criminal businesses he was shutting down.
The threats against employees.
The trust vote.
The fear that rejecting Claire would begin a violent conflict.
Hannah listened.
Then she said, “Fear explains choices. It doesn’t make them right.”
Daniel nodded.
His phone rang.
Martin had opened the estate’s backup archive.
The files contained footage from months earlier.
Claire had not acted only during the gala.
She had entered Hannah’s room repeatedly while Hannah slept.
